Just say NO to Marty Schottenheimer

I swear next post I see suggesting we bring in that losing, locker room cancer of a coach, I'm going to or possibly just .

Our starting qb can't hold on to the ball, our backup qb can't hit the broad side of a barn from 30 yards, our 3d string qb is a wide eyed rookie not tall enough to see over the dashboard and reach the pedals at the same time. Meanwhile *both* our starting cornerbacks were out, and besides getting (surprise!) burned by some deep balls otherwise our defense played a respectable game.

The response is NOT to bring in some guy hated by everyone he's ever worked with. Heck I don't understand even why everyone wants to blame Billick for Pittsburgh, half the posters here carry on like he personally must have broken Chris McAlister, infected Samari Rolle, greased the ball for McNair, and told Boller to overthrow his receivers.

He's just the coach, people. I'm not saying he's perfect and he's clearly made some mistakes. But he's just the coach.

And PLEASE stop bringing up Marty Schottenheimer.

    /end rant

As I have said before in other posts. The head coach has to put his players in the best position to win. In other words dont set them up for failure. Billick clearly has not done that this season.

Like I said in another thread, Marty coached for Art once already. Please don't bring him back.

festivus, Marty was not "hated by everyone he ever worked with," but I totally agree with the rest of your rant. Billick is the same coach who led this team to a 13-3 record last year, and I don't think he became a complete idiot in the offseason. I would rather have Billick coaching a Ravens playoff team than Marty (or Cowher, the other flavor of the month, who also gagged in the playoffs more often than not).

I don't share your disdain for Marty -- his players actually like him -- but he's not an upgrade over Billick.

I know that was a bit of an overstatement. But so is saying 'his players actually like him'.

    Apologies for the exaggeration.

No apology needed -- I just remember his brief stint with the Redskins, when the players apparently couldn't stand him at the beginning of the season, but by the end of the season, they were all on his side. So he must have done something right to turn them around. He was also well-liked by the Chargers players, but not by the GM.

So at his last two coaching jobs, he was run out by Danny Synder, who hated not being able to call all the shots, and Chargers GM A.J. Smith, who by many accounts is a jerk. Good luck to anyone who has to work for those two asses.

Although not a big fan of Marty's playoff record (could anyone?), AJ Smith fired a coach who had just took his team to a 14-2 record and replaced him with Norv Turner, a guy whose career record as a head coach is 62-86 including a whopping 1 playoff appearance (which they promptly lost).

Marty's career record? 200-126. Doesn't take a genius to figure out who's on the wrong side of that equation.

    Something else to consider.

Marty had some darn good assistants in San Diego.

Both are HCs now. That really says a lot.

Bring in Marty would be like marrying Rosie O'Donnell immediately after divorcing your first wife because she was too fat.

That's great! I'll bet you gave it a lot of thought.
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

Re: Just say NO to Marty Schottenheimer

Well you must remember T, that I live in San Diego and the dark shadow of Martyball hung over this town like a storm cloud all last season, despite the 14-2 record. It was inevitable that Marty would be booted if he couldn't win a playoff game with that much talent on the roster.

    UNLEASH THE BEASTS!!!!
