Re: A "futures" contract??
I think it means that he was on the practice squad at the end of the 2008 season. So the future contract means that he's already signed to the Steelers roster for the 2009 season.

Re: A "futures" contract??
A "futures" contract is a 2009 contract signed by a player who is currently a FA. The guy off the PS we signed a couple of weeks ago signed futures contracts. If a guy like Dan Cody - currently unemployed - signed a contract for next year with someone it would be a futures contract.
Technically, the league year runs from March through Feb, so any player signed now is signing a 2009 contract, even though the 2009 league year has not yet started, hence the term "futures" - a contract for a future year.
Guys like Suggs, Ray, Scott, etc. are still technically under contract until 2/27, so they aren't FAs yet. If they re-signed before then, it wouldn't be a futures contract, but a contract extension, since it would be signed while they are still technically under the terms of their 2008 contracts.Last edited by B-more Ravor; 02-12-2009 at 10:45 AM.
