Re: Marshall Matchup
Just no way any of those DB's are gonna contain Marshall, he is on pace for a career year. Best chance is to double team him and key Ed Reed on his side, but that would just leave Devone Bess who is also on pace for a career year on the slot. Hopefully he just doesnt get murdered by Ray Lewis.

Re: Marshall Matchup
Slow down there, slappy. Over the last three years he's averaged 103 catches, 1,235 yards and 8 TDs. This year he's on pace for 107 catches, 1,344 yards and 2 TDs. I would pretty much in no way call that a "career year." Bess is also having a fine year, but calling a 3rd year receiver "on pace for a career year" is pretty much never a stretch, and let's be realistic, he's on pace for 850-900 yards and 6-7 TDs which are not exactly worldbeater numbers.
We don't need to contain Marshall all that much to win this game. He's had solid numbers every game. If anything, I'd say we just need to make sure he doesn't beat us over the top regularly, and look to otherwise contain their offense and we should be fine.

Re: Marshall Matchup
Why is everyone calling Bess a #3 WR? Pretty sure he starts opposite Marshall now. Hartline is clearly the 3rd option...
EDIT: OK, stand corrected...Hartline was starting up until last week.
And Bess' main value is really coming from the extra attention being thrown at Marshall. He doesn't scare me at WR. Marshall is a tough WR to contain, but we've done it before...Last year vs Denver, we held Marshall to 4 catches, 24 yards. That was pretty much the same secondary and same pass rushing scheme we use now. Not to say Marshall can't make any big catches against us, but certainly last year, Orton had a tough time finding him.
I would drop Ed Reed on Marshall to double team him, then single cover everyone else and focus more on getting a pass rush to get to Henne..

Re: Marshall Matchup
I don't think we can contain him as such. I think if we can limit him to 80 odd yards, I'd take that. Most important matchup today for me is Yanda v Wake. If Yanda can slow Wake down then Flacco should have the time to make some noise in the passing game.

Re: Marshall Matchup
As long as Marshall doesn't get in the endzone three times, like Lee Evans did for the Bills...I'm perfectly fine with him getting yards and catches.

Anyone but Washington, who coincidentally might not be a bad matchup for Bess...

Re: Marshall Matchup
Fabian needs to come out and make a statement today...Usually, I'd favor him against a speedy, slippery WR because of his agility and speed. But Buffalo had Steve Johnson on him a few times for big gains, and Fabian's tackling in that game got to be ATROCIOUS towards the end.
Also be interesting to see in what way Josh Wilson is used this game. But I think just about everyone would sync up Webb on Marshall...he's the closest thing we have to a physical CB..

Re: Marshall Matchup
I think you must confuse your Marshall for someone else. We have eliminated him from previous games. Check your history, he doesnt do well against us and we just man him up. Better yet we have the Phins # anyway. What your weak at we are strong and what your strong at so are we. Your QB is good for two picks today and possibly a pick six.
Oh and Webb is the best choice to be on Marshall today. He is our most physical corner.

Re: Marshall Matchup
we've actually only had one game against Marshall...the game last year. Prior to that, we had last played Denver was in 2006, which was Marshall's rookie year, but before he had worked his way into the passing game.

Re: Marshall Matchup
We can't just double Marshall all day. Henne would just take advantage of the other one on one matchups. We have to double him fairly often though and disguise our coverages enough to keep Henne guessing.
We have to mix it up, and as PSU said, keep him from getting behind the secondary for a score.
If we get a decent pass rush THAT would really help. I'm sure we worked on that over the bye week. I'm hoping to see more pre-snap movement that will disguise when we are blitzing and when we aren't. I think one of the reasons for the lack of pass rush (not the only one) is that we're too predictable and show our hand too easily when we blitz.

Re: Marshall Matchup
I am not even sure a rush is necessary today.
Only 2 rushing TD's this season for the Fish. 4-5 up front, double Marshall and let Reed do his thing and we can win this smooth. I am a little worried about Fasano though.
All comes down to execution, IMO.WARNING: This post may contain material offensive to those who lack wit, humor, common sense and/or supporting factual or anecdotal evidence.
