John Unitas # 19
If the Indy Colts and the NFL Hall Of Fame totally separated themselves from all records refering to the BALTIMORE COLTS. Would you mind if Indy let some in the future wear number 19. I still would hope they would leave it retired.

IMO, they should never have allowed Marvin Harrison to wear John Mackey's number. We're talking Hall of Fame player here!

Re: John Unitas # 19
If our records were severed from those of the Indianapolis franchise, I could care less about how Indiana doles out its players' numbers. Actually, in that case, I would rather like to see their players wear the Baltimore Colts hallowed numbers, becuase it would reinforce the separation between our records and theirs.
Of course, the best bet would be to see them also ditch the blue & white in favor of another color scheme: how about solid puke yellow, helmets doen to the shoes?
In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T
came in fourth, behind ML King (3rd), Abe Lincoln (2nd) and Homer Simpson (1st).

You can't retire numbes based on HOF credentials, some teams would just run out of numbers for some positions. This isn't baseball, numbers have positional meaning and there are limited WR, RB and QB numbers, for example.IMO, they should never have allowed Marvin Harrison to wear John Mackey's number. We're talking Hall of Fame player here!
19 is special, but that's where it ends with the Colts. Same with 52 here. Number retirement is a very, very rare thing and should be.
Didn't other Colts where HOF numbers, except 19, while here?

Re: John Unitas # 19
I don't think its right that the colts left. with that said I also don't see a reason why any of you guys are making a fuss about whether or not Unitas' number is used or not in Indy. They are not the Baltimore Colts any longer. We don't have a say in what they do. Thank god we have Johnny Unitas Plaza, that great statue and some of the old names and number in the ring.
After that who gives a flying F what they do.WOW! I feel so fortunate that the Ravens did what they had to do to make this happen. Thank you. My Heart is with the Raven....My Heart is with Baltimore and its great fans. What can I say. Here We Go!!! --Ray Lewis

Re: John Unitas # 19
In my perfect world, the indy colts wopuld seperate their records from ours, and therefor should unretire any Baltimore Colts numbers. WE (the baltimore franchise, in this case the Ravens) should then retire those numbers significant to the old Baltimore franchise.

Only 19 was retired by the Baltimore Colts. And I don't know if that was ever officially done, I just don't think anybody had the nerve to ask for it.

Re: John Unitas # 19
I am kind of torn on this issue. Since they are separated from the Baltimore Colts, who gives a F what they do with numbers, but on the other hand it just wouldn't look right to see someone wearing #19 in that uni now. The Colts should do what the Ravens do, just have the number unofficially retired.

Re: John Unitas # 19
Scott Mitchell didn't give us of anything to cheer about but I seem to remember Unitas standing on the sidelines being proud that the city he loved had a team playing in the NFL. His number 19 was played using the colors of Blue not Purple so I personally dont think he saw a conflict. However now that the man has past, I hope there isn't a hotshot QB or wr who has a favorite number 19 and decides they have to play with it, here in Baltimore.Scott Mitchell didn't think the number was unofficially retired.WOW!
