FWIW, his Cap number is over $7M, but his pay for this year is $4.4M.

    Their options with Foxworth are:

    (1) Do a simply restructure, they'd reduce his $4.4M salary down to the veteran minimum for a 6-year player ($700K) and give him the difference as a bonus. That would reduce this year's Cap number by $1.85M. Not really a great savings and it would add $1.85M onto next year's cap. So, they've saved cap space this year, at the expense of cap space next year.

    or

    (2) Release him and open up $4M in cap space ($4.4M in savings from his release less $375M for his replacement under the rule of 51. But, releasing him now would cause the to have to carry $3M in dead money against the 2012 cap.

    or

    (3) have him agree to a paycut and then offer the difference back to him via incentives. Since he didn't play last year, those incentives would be Not likely to be earned and therefore wouldn't count against the cap this year. Whatever incentives he reached would be paid to him this year and then count against the 2012 cap.

He can't. Once you've started camp on the active roster, you can't be moved to PUP.

    THIS

is why I thought it was a bad idea to let Wilson walk away from the team.

I thought the Ravens tech and conditioning coaches were keeping track of these guy's development through secret conference calls during the lockout!

As fast as Wilson signed with the Skins and for what he signed for it almost looks like to me that he wanted to leave and go there.

Players weren't allowed to interact with the coaches and weren't able to train at the facilities. How exactly was Foxworth supposed to be working with coaches/trainers on recovery and/or the Ravens supposed to be keeping tabs on his rehab?

So what you're saying is, coaches should have broken rules, and not just break rules, but to do so in order to keep tabs on the guy that was basically leading negotiations from the player's side?

He is a DeMatha grad, a Terp and a life long Redskins fan. It's the culmination of a kid's dream come true.

Of course he wanted to go there.

Playing for the skins was more important than winning?

Still pissed we lost him because he really didn't get a ridiculous contract. I still can't believe we wouldn't have been able to keep him.

I understad, no knock on him wanting to play for a loser. Me on the other hand if the Ravens were as bad and as poorly ran as the Skins and I had the chance to sign with a winning/high class franchise right down the road such as the Eagles... Sorry Ravens...I like to win.

In every sport, there are fans who stick by their team no matter what. You think that dynamic changes once someone starts playing the game? I don't.

Now add into that equation that Wilson is getting paid by that franchise a pretty decent sum and Bruce Allen is actually making smart moves (save the Chester signing).

    Makes perfect sense to me.

You can be put on IR, though.

Ravor, what would the cap implications be if Foxworth was on IR? Cutting him would have cap and karma implications, but what about IR?

No, he still counts fully if he's on IR or PUP (even if he could be). There's no Cap relief for either.

If he's not ready in 5 week, but could play at some point this year, they are better keeping him on the active roster (like they did with Stallworth last year), if they feel they can keep that roster space open. Otherwise - short of a paycut - it's a waste to put him on IR - then, you've still got to pay him, but you can't play him.

He's not going on IR for a 2nd straight year. You cut him if it comes to that.

    Hmm.

You don't want to cut him for cap and karma reasons. IR doesn't help. Seems like the best strategy might be extend him for a year with a cap-friendly pay cut?

    edit:

Option 1 from Ravor's post above:

What about a two year extension, instead of one? Could that open any meaningful options?

At this point, he's passed his pre-TC physical, so he's probably not eligible for IR anyway. I know people get put on IR for a variety of bogus reasons, but those are usually lesser players who are being "red shirted". They don't care. Foxworth might be a different story.

OTOH, they could probably release him based on that pre-TC physical, but they could very well face a grievence, with him saying he is hurt again or not recovered.

Sure, they call it an injury settlement.

Players like it because instead of sitting out for the whole year they can sign with another team once they get better.

Brian, didn't the NFLPA have a site up that listed all players salaries and contracts?
