Who's to Blame for the #5 Blamers

There HAS to be reason that Joe Flacco is the most talked about person in Baltimore. I've never seen anything like this in all my life. "Idiot Fans" cannot be the reason, becuase they have always existed and there are no more or less of them now then before. I have my idea out of this list, but I'm curious to hear other people's selection:

    A) The Ghost of Kyle Boller - people are still not over that, and as a city maybe we over-analyze everything Quarterback now

    B) Facebook/Twitter - Too many voices and instant reactions?

    C) 105.7 The Fan - Is it just me, or has it gotten to the point where Joe Flacco is ALL THEY TALK ABOUT. Even the segment promo's now, all week are "You're not going to be believe what John Clayton says about Flacco" "You're not going to beleive what Jawarski says about Flacco" "or Brian Baldinger". It's crazy. Especially the first two shows. Positive or Negative, it's all they talk about. 1570 is a bit more well rounded and complains more about the O-Line

    D) His perceived lack of enthusiam/leadership - Like him or not, you have to admit he looks as excited as someone watching paint dry at times. Or other times, he looks a bit shaken like the Jets game

    E) Mike Preston ? - Or maybe more specific too many people want to be Mike Preston these days

    F) The Orioles - hear me out on this one - If Them O's Hon had a fighting chance people would not be so wound tight about Joe Flacco & Ravens becuase it's really all Baltimore has to cling to for hope. When the Ravens lose a game it's like the end of the world.

    Maybe I'm forgetting one. Thoughts?

A is the obvious reason. Many Ravens fans took a 'won't get fooled again' attitude after Boller.

A is a big one, and the local media is another big one. They seem to throw fuel on the fire and encourage the idiot callers to talk about Joe.

I bet though, in most NFL cities, most QB's are getting the same type of hand-wringing treatment from the fans. It's a symptom of how NFL fans are these days, fueled by tweeting and twatting, twonking and spacebooking.

The 105.7 thing is funny. I'm out of town and listened for the first time in a while online this morning. When I heard those promos my first though was, "Actually, I bet I can believe what they think." And my second was, .

I think having dealt with Kyle Boller for so long that its definitely the main culprit. Flacco makes a bad pass people make it seem like hes the worst QB in the league other fan bases see the same thing and dont think much of it. I dont like the lack of accuracy being shown this year do to stretching the field with these long passes but overall I think hes taken a huge step forward with audibles and presnap reads.

Someone posted in a different post that maybe its because the NFL has some really great QBs playing right now in Peyton Manning (when he returns) and Tom Brady. We are holding Joe to that standard.

Same fans that drove Eddie Murray out of Balt. Fans and media.

It's the proliferation of young stud QBs in the League right now. On top of that, Joe raised expectations to absurd levels after the PIT game and failed to follow up at TENN. Then he shows up huge in STL then steps on his own crank in Prime Time against NYJ...

Remember, some Ravens fans see the glass half full and some half empty. No big whoop.

I think there's also an idea that the "window is closing" on Ray and Ed's career so there is a lot of pressure to get home field and win the Super Bowl this year. That is coupled with the Boller experience where having merely a competent QB in 2003-2007 could've resulted in multiple Super Bowl appearances. As someone who lives outside the area, I am usually shocked on the rare occasions when I listen to sports talk radio. There are literally 20-25 franchises that would happily trade places with us.

I think it's because Joe is more emblematic of an old school QB. He doesn't give the fans or the media the instant gratification that they so desperately crave. He's not going to provide the flashy quotes. He doesn't know where the cameras are on the field so he can play to the audience. He just wants to do what any pro wants to do: Improve his craft and win.

Re: Who's to Blame for the #5 Blamers

First of all, just about every QB in any city has his detractors, so Baltimore is nothing special in this case.

People love to dog on Boller, but I recall the line could only seem to run block and his only viable passing option was Todd Heap. So as erratic as he was, he didn't have much help. I get tired of hearing how we wasted an ALL-WORLD defense on Boller/Billick those years. The offensive line up was a shadow to what the damn near PRO-BOWL positions of almost the entire defense.

Facebook/Twitter to me isn't a big deal. Twitter seems the fastest way to get breaking info from the NFL or for players to make asses of themselves.

105.7 the Commercial has made great progress in dumping Marks and Bulldog, but they do harp on Joe Flacco too much and the callers are pre-trained to talk that angle to no end. I like Ed Norris, so I'll always listen, but it is the best excuse in town to get Sirius/XM with the NFL Channel. I only flip over to 105.7 when there is a commercial.

Joe Flacco's demeanor is much like Joe Montana's so, we can end that argument right there.

Mike Preston? Are you kidding? Negativity is his meal ticket. If you've seen Preston, you know he needs a lot of negativity for a meal. One of thee BEST things about this board is no one really post transcripts of his tripe over here.

Orioles? Nah, most people don't even register we have a baseball team anymore. I can name one player, Cal Ripken... wait....

Nobody. Not even them. It's a genetic condition, sadly.

I wouldn't concede that point at all. People are louder, prouder, and stupider nowadays than at any previous point in my lifetime. People aren't ashamed of being stupid anymore; they're actually proud of how stupid they are nowadays. Anybody with more than a second grade education is written off as belonging to some "elite" or other. Look at the tv or listen to the radio: the market for stupidity is endless. Count the shows you see and classify them as intelligent or stupid. For every one show about science or history, there are 20 "Real Housewives of Wherever" on.

I'll take the unreasonable expectation of perfection for $400, Alex. When people hear franchise QB, they think Tom Brady. Those same people get pissed off when they find out Joe Flacco is not Tom Brady.

I could not agree more with this. People really have "dumbed down".

If you took Tom Brady and brought him here and put a different name on his jersey people would complain he's not Tom Brady. Because not even Tom Brady is Tom Brady.

edit: Proliferation of young studs? I haven't seen a "young stud" yet who I would trust to carry Joe's jock, thank you very much.

I think even Tom Brady has taken some heat from Bostonians in recent years because he's "gone Hollywood" or doesn't live in the area year round. You'd think they'd be more upset about the back to back opening round home playoff losses

Down here, in South Florida, not many people have anything but positive things to say about Flacco. I think it might be a local thing for you guys. If I never found these raven forums, I would have no idea there were so many flacco haters in the world. I guess it is perspective? We have the likes of Garrard (i know he is gone this season), that "guy in tampa" and Henne the last couple of years. I am pretty sure most fans in FL would take "BIG ARM FLACCO" over most the QB's that played down here any day of the week.
