Re: RavenSpace on MySpace to go defunct?
I don't know how to respond, really, but I just had to note this uh ... child rearing philosophy. Does this work? Do kids really not grow up and imitate their parents' philosophies and cultural values? If I cus, if I drink, if I watch rated R movies, they know they are not allowed to do it ...

Re: RavenSpace on MySpace to go defunct?
OK -- agree. But so what? The NFL owns the property, and has the right to do with it what it chooses.
As to Bruce's "strong words" -- no offense to Bruce, with whom I have tossed back a few cold ones in the past -- he's another journalist. i.e. one of many who think they have extraordinary privileges to report -- which you will not find in the the 1st Amendment. If the NFL wants to limit the video shots to what comes out of their cameras, it's their right. Just like a movie theater or a rock concert can ban camcorders.
Point is: if the NFL wants to censor its employees and how they communicate, it's their right to do so. You or I can accept that, or choose to buy another product: United League, CFL, Orioles, or NASCAR.
Where did I "condone" banning it? I stated somewhere far above that I would prefer to see every possible outlet of Ravens news. If RavensSpace offered something different than 24X7, Scout, or the Ravens web-site, I'd go there myself -- but no one could address that anywhere in this discussion, so I'll just assume that RavenSpace offers nothing more. Sorry for those 1400 members, but they'll have to find other web-sites, unless the NFL and the Ravens can come to an accomodation.
What I will defend is property rights. It's the NFL's, not yours or mine. But, please do not confuse Big Brother - 1984 with the NFL. We are not talking about the Government, we are talking about the property rights of a private entity. In a 2003 BBC poll that asked Brits to name the "Greatest American Ever", Mr. T

Yeah, he's one of THOSE guys that just like arguing.
Signed,

He did not support or condone their actions, he just said they had the right to do it. And they do.Lastly, as I said before, if you support what they are doing you essentially condone their actions.

Re: RavenSpace on MySpace to go defunct?
"And nothing stops you or your friends from opening a MySpace site dedicated to supporting the Ravens."
When i first read about the NFL "banning" the ravens myspace page, I thought here goes the NFL again. But after looking at all the facts, the NFL isnt getting anymore or less money if the ravens do or dont have a myspace page. All the content on the Ravens myspace either is or can be available on baltimoreravens.com. so fans go to baltimoreravens.com, doesnt cost the fan anymore or less.
I think the problem is, on myspace, there are lots of "ravens" pages, and someone might think they are on the "official" myspace page but not really be on it. I did a quick search and found at least 20 Ravens websites with great content and look real official, but wasnt the ravens official myspace site.
So i think the NFL has a point to say remove it to not cause confusion or harm, or if one of the bogus sites had "objectionable" material on it they dont want to be a part of it.
Of course these sites will still exist, but then the ravens can say we dont have a myspace page, so all ravens pages on myspace are not them.Season ticket holder since 1996 Section 148 Tailgate Lot H

Re: RavenSpace on MySpace to go defunct?
2 issues seem to be at play in this thread:
1) What right does the NFL have to protect itself from any negative online content related with their trademarks / name brands
2) What responsiblity the state has to regulate content online, etc
Essentially, while it sucks, i think the NFL has a legitimate right to worry about what it's trademarks and products are being associated with.
On the 2nd question, I think some parents go to far looking to the state for help on raising their kids. I think its fine if some parents choose to limit what TV their kids watch or what they do on the internet. And also, more power to you if you trust your kids to do whatever you want. In the end, I dont see it as the governments responsibility to raise your kids for you, and limit content.
Thats my 2 cents.
Myspace is crack and really I wouldn't mind it dying a slow death. Too much wierd stuff on there. I by far prefer Facebook as it was in the beginning, when the community of those allowed to join was limited.

Re: RavenSpace on MySpace to go defunct?
How many friends you have on MySpace has nothing to do with responsibility. You could have 1,000 friends and be responsible or 10 friends and be irresponsible. There is no correlation whatsoever. And by nature of being on this site (or any other message board) we're "collecting" friends in a different way. Is it direct parallel? No, but it's very similar. It's a forum for like-minded people to communicate. I signed up for MySpace recently to promote my Ravens blog (link to my Blogimore Ravens MySpace page) and already I have found other fans with whom to communicate, and I have done nothing weird, irresponsible or illegal. Without MySpace, I may not have found these people, or at least not right away.
Yes, there are some weirdos on MySpace, but with 180 million profiles, what do you expect? You should police the people, not the vehicle with which they choose to communicate with one another. No one is forcing anyone to be on MySpace or RavenSpace or Scout.com or 24x7, but we choose to be here or there or wherever, and it'd be nice if we could keep having that choice available. Isn't that what America is all about? Choice?
I'm not saying that any of y'all are wrong for your opinions, just offering my two cents that I think it's unfair to criticize what basically amounts to a communications tool because of the actions of a few high-profile cases of criminal activity. Criminal activity that is, of course, not surprising when you consider there are, again, 180 million profiles on MySpace (and only 300 million people in the entire United States).
That said, I think ultimately the league legally has the right the do what they're doing; however, I still think they're making a mistake.
