LS Morgan Cox is Voted the 2011 Baltimore Ravens Ed Block Courage Award Recipient



November 15th, 2011 – Baltimore, Md. – The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation has announced that LS Morgan Cox is the recipient of the 2011 Ed Block Courage Award for the Baltimore Ravens. Cox was the lone undrafted rookie free agent to make the Ravens’ 53-man roster during the 2010 campaign. In his first NFL season, he snapped for a pair of specialists who earned Pro Bowl honors, starting kicker Billy Cundiff and first-alternate punter Sam Koch. Cox also recorded two special teams tackles in 15 contests.

In a pivotal Week 16 win at Cleveland, Cox suffered severe ligament damage in his knee, including a torn ACL, during the second quarter. Though he was unable to run or block at full strength, Cox remained in the game, snapping on three punts, two field goals and two extra points. He would subsequently be placed on Injured Reserve the following week, but vigorously rehabbed throughout the offseason and training camp to return for the 2011 season opener, just nine months removed from his injury. Cox has played in every game for the Ravens this season.

Off the field, Cox is highly active in the Baltimore community. He supports several initiatives, including the Countdown to Kickoff BBQ and A Purple Evening, the Ravens’ annual women’s event at M&T Bank Stadium. He also took part in the New Town Elementary reading night as a celebrity reader and joined Under Armour and the Wounded Warrior Project in September 2010 to fill and send backpacks to soldiers overseas. Cox has also supported the Ed Block Courage Award’s Mini Golf Day by participating as a celebrity golfer.

The Courage Award is named after Ed Block, the longtime head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts who was a pioneer in his profession and a respected humanitarian. Some of his most significant contributions came in the tireless manner in which he gave of himself to help improve the lives of children. He stood for courage and championed the cause of those who displayed that characteristic. His work and philosophy continue today through the Foundation that bears his name.The Foundation’s efforts are endorsed by the NFL and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society (PFATS).

I think what struck me about the Cox injury was how classy the Browns were (especially Shaun Rogers) when they knew he was injured and staying in the game. He was on the field for 5 ST snaps after he blew out his ACL and they did not concentrate their rushes through the middle. When Cox was about to go down on one snap, Rogers actually grabbed Cox's jersey and prevented him from going down. I thought that was awesome for a division foe.
