Drew Brees is likely to hold out.

Matt Forte is another guy who is likely to hold out.

One journalist's assessment put it higher than what I had heard on the radio yesterday

"With about $40 million in salary cap space before the league-mandated reduction this year, the Redskins are expected to aggressively seek free agents when the market opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The NFL’s action could hamper them, but they will be allowed to spread the penalty over two years."

So how the hell do they continue to have that much available cap damn near every year after spending and over paying guys yearly?
At what point does it catch up, if ever? Particularly the dead money they have to carry.

    I don't get it!!

It would have caught up with them but there was that uncapped year where they "reset" their cap... Hence the penalty...

Wouldn't be surprised to see Grubbs pay a visit either if he gets that far.
Articles state Tenn. is trying to boost up the interior of their line and have already had Hutchinson in to visit.

I get that, but how trhe hell do they have 40 million available prior to the penalty after everything they've done over the past several years, just about on an annual basis?

I don't know if anyone caught this earlier but Jason Lacanfora said that the Ravens offer to Grubbs was in line with the Yanda deal, 5/32 with only $10 million guaranteed. Considering that Yanda took an extremely under market deal for some odd reason, that is why Grubbs is out trying to drum up interest now. I am sure his agent said "uh...thanks but no thanks...we will get back to you" because there isn't a snowballs chance in hell they were even considering something that low.

This is what I said about Grubbs a month ago and I think it still holds true....
From the Ravens perspective they just signed top guard Marshal Yanda to a 5 year contract extension, and while normally that might preclude a team from giving out another one at the same position, Yanda signed an extremely team friendly deal. If Grubbs was willing to do the same I have no doubt the team would love to have him back, but that doesn’t seem likely with only one other premier guard on the market. There will probably be some team out there who will overpay just enough to get him out of Baltimore, much to the disappointment of the fanbase. I think that even with a “hometown discount” Grubbs would be looking for a similar deal to that of Justin Blalock of the Falcons, something in the $16 million guaranteed $40 million total value range over 5 years. On the open market he might be able to push the $20 million guaranteed $50 million total value mark pretty easily on a 6 year deal.
If the Ravens opened at $32 million over 5 years that is a pretty low offer and would guess that is not "take it or leave it" offer and they have wiggle room.

Last year's Redskins were awful. I'm not sure they had one single offensive starter who would have started on the Packers, Patriots, Saints, or even Ravens. They had a lot of those bloated contracts expire at the same time, which explains their cap space. I'm certainly not envious of them in any way.

Big factor has got to be the fact the NFL let them spread the penalty over 2 years. If they forced them to take it all in 2012 that essentially wipes out all their space. Also probably would have guaranteed a Snyder lawsuit against the NFL.

They probably shouldn't have been allowed to spread that penalty over two years then. They clearly are not REALLY feeling the punishment of their actions.

It wasn't about what they did the past several years, it was about what they did last year alone in an uncapped year. Last year's uncapped year was a big driver in how they arrived at being $40m under the cap this year. I saw reports their player payroll was about $170M last year. Hence the penalty this year.

He's either giving a home town discount like Yanda did or he's gone.

I would bet it won't be long before he's gone!

They have no first round picks for the next 3 years and just have a decent wide receiver an absurd amount of money. The penalties may not come back to bite, but the other things will.

Bingo...at the end of the day, they are still the Redskins and their owner is still Daniel Snyder.

In some ways they might have felt the impact. They probably eliminated themselves in the bidding for VJax

The problem is Yanda didn't just give them a hometown discount, he gave them a brand new Mercedes for Christmas with big bow wrapped around it in the driveway too. He also threw in some rims, new system and a few vacations for the kids down the road. And free gas for life too.

I am sure there is a team that will pay more than the Ravens but Grubbs still being out there, says to me that he hasn't generated the interest that his agent thought he would. I guess we will see...

classic Ozzie move where he puts out a fair offer and tells the guy to beat it if he can...looks like so far Grubbs can't even after Nicks has set the top of the guard market
