Gaffney had already been in the league 5 years and started 50+ games before he ever played with McDaniels. He was most successful the past 3 years, 2 of which were in Denver in McDaniels' system, but I don't think McDaniels has had much, if anything, to do with his success.

Gaffney is a thoroughly mediocre player. He can run some decent routes, but he can't really beat man coverage and doesn't get any YAC. To me he's essentially Boldin--why do we need to duplicate what Boldin can give us?

I wouldn't touch Gaffney for the veteran minimum. We need to improve at the WR spot by 1) drafting a quality player, and 2) developing the guys we have.

He had a better season than two of our starting WR's with arguably the worst starting QB in the NFL throwing him the ball. Right now we could do with any weapons for Flacco, and it would probably save us from reaching for a first round WR.

Osi is also on the trade block, I heard rumours Ozzie tried to get him last year. That could be worth a look at, we'd need to cut someone to get some more cap though. As for Gaffney I was just throwing it out there, personally I really want Nick Toon.

I heard the opposite about Osi. Jerry Reese for the first time said he would look to extend Osi this year

I heard the same thing. He really wants to get Cruz and Osi's contracts figured out.

He did play for Mcdaniels for 5 of his 10 years. 3 in NE, 2 in Denver, but he did have a decent 3rd year with houston. im not really to sure of his time there to be honest. I thought he was kind of a disappointment being the 33rd overall i thought he was expected to be more than he was. He was starting and that production would be decent for a 3rd WR but if he was a 2 that probably wasnt that good. In NE i know he was a 3rd or 4th option and put up similar production as he did previously with more opportunities.

context, he was their #2 WR and teams took away the #1 while they also played from behind, a lot. translation, he was targeted more than our #1 WR even with a shitty QB, thatll translate to more stats. I dont think hes horrible, just not worth trading anything for. If we had to use a 5th id rather take a WR in the 5th (or 1-4) than Gaffney, but i do agree we need some talent infused at that position. Thats why i hope we go WR in 1 or 2 depending on whos available.

I think that rumor may be coming from Osi's agent because Osi isn't real tickled about being the #2 behind Tuck and JPP.

Now he is a player we should also look at. Maybe be this years spot player. He does get injured alot but heard he is a great blocker in protection.

I wanted him before, BUT he's a 4-3 DE. He's too small to take Reddings spot and snaps and he has never really been a OLB in a 3-4. He can get to the QB for sure but just don't think he's a good fit for our system. UNLESS we play alot more nickle on 1st and 2nd downs and use McClain as the strong side OLB(which is his natural position really) and put Suggs hand in the dirt opposite and sandwiching Ngata and Cody. THAT could be a VERY strong and dangerous front. Problem being WHO is your weak side LB, and will that still keep guys off Ray?

That being said we DO have 3 very capable CB's and ALOT of teams typically use th 3 wide as thir base offense, and most of the teams we play this year also. So very possible it could work. IF the numbers would work out right.

We do go into the nickel quite a bit, he could come in for our 4-3 formations. There are plenty of second round type LB's who could play weakside LB in a 4-3 like Kendricks, Zach Brown (not a fan), or Bobby Wagner. Also Ayanbedjo and McClellin could possibly play there.

    Suggs-Ngata-Cody-Osi
Rotation with Kruger, McPhee, Kindle, McAdoo, and Jones.

    That's quite a scary front.

That would be a good move. Especially with Caldwell now here. Addai could really help Joe out in 3rd and longs. I could see a lot 2 back with Addai and Rice in those spots.

It was Reese who said it but it could be in reaction to Osi being pissed about those things. Knowing Reese he just wants to keep Osi focused for this last year that he's under contract and then let him test free agency in 2013. That guy was a monster in the playoffs.

Oh and Brian Dawkins has called it a day.

Great player, I think he is a HOF worthy player too.
