I appreciate your comments and it is good advice.

I actually respect the Ravens as a team and front office a whole lot. My main point was that the Steelers and Ravens always have a plan for managing the cap and have proven over the years to be able to execute it.

This rivalry is going nowhere and it will again be fun to watch two good teams next year.

Are we sure chris myers isnt going command a larger contract? Looking at some of the FA rankings he seems to crack the top 20 on most. I realize its not a glamor position and his parallels to Birk who got a 3 year 12mil contract at 32 are quite clear. will the demand be higher than when Birk was a FA and we basically bid against the vikings, lower in fact, and he chose to come here anyway?

I don't know what player you've been watching, but this season he was a beast of a run blocker. I seen him pancake quite a few players this year, and would certainly be an upgrade over birk, besides he is only 27 so that's another thing to think about.

Chris Myers will demand too much money, and I'm sure the Texans are gonna do everything in their power to retain him. He is like what Grubbs is to us to the Texans. I would say he is probably the best C in the NFL right now, so loads of teams are gonna go after him. Players like Pouncey and Mangold get all the attention, but I would rank Myers way above any of them, the Texans Oline was beastly this season with Myers leading that line, while Pouncey and Mangold had average seasons commanding some of the worst lines in football.

I've seen almost every Raider game over the past 7 years. I have a friend who is a huge Raiders fan but refuses to get DirecTV so he comes over when the the Ravens aren't playing a late game.

So why do you think Satele will be reasonably priced if he has those kind of skills? Why did the Raiders give him the low tender last year and no one tried to sign him for the peanuts it would have cost?

I do think he had a better season because of Wisniewki playing next to him and the switch to more man from zone blocking. Satele is still schizophrenic type player though between his very good pass blocking and his below average run blocking.

On Myers, I know you're right but if they are going to throw good money at someone I like it to be a player who is really worth it.

If both command the same amount of money, it seems Satele would be more valuable, simply because hes younger and still able to improve, but at the same time, if theyre teh same because MYers price fell i dont think it would be beneficial to sign a young player that needs work as opposed to an old vet that just needs to be plugged in. Market will dictate everything, im just curious if the price drops on Myers to within the Ravens range.

If we some how managed to get Myers it would be awesome, he probably has three years left in him at an elite level. He is by far the fastest and most athletic C in the league.

Satele has been on two average teams, one good team and the worst team in the NFL. Most centers make their reputation by playing on good teams with great running games. No one really knew anything about Chris Myers before this season because he was on a bad team, where as centers like Pouncey get too much credit because they are first round picks on a great team. Scott Wells is probably not a pro bowl center, but since he snaps the ball to Rogers, and was on a 15-1 team this year, he gets a trip to the Hawaii, and is probably wrongly considered the best center in the NFC. Show me a team who are not that good, and are low profile with a starting C in the pro bowl. I can think of only one center, the Panthers have one because he is special. Alex Mack, who in my opinion is the best center in the AFC North didn't make the pro bowl this year because he plays for the Browns, but if you watch him play he certainly had the best season out of all the other starting centers in the AFCN.

My point is, Satele is not the best C in the NFL, and right now he isn't really a pro bowl level center. But he is certainly an upgrade over a 35 year old Matt Birk, and I doubt any center in this years draft could play better than what Satele could for us in 2012, apart from Peter Konz who is a special player. He made some key blocks this year and paved the way for both McFadden and Michael Bush. I think getting him would be a great pick that would save us money, a draft pick, and would give us a young durable player.

I would love a pick up like Leonard Pope but IDK if he'd come here to be the third TE. The OL concerns me the most so I hope it's not pieced together this year, hopefully it's something formidable. Should be interesting, I really don't know what they're going to do... should be good.

Satele is an option as is Gurode but I don't really like either. The Pats have 2 starting Centers who are free agents. I would be interested in which ever hits the market.

Yes, Khan has been very good over the years. But, this year, they're facing a very tough cap situation. Sorry, but a "cap genius" (your description) doesn't have his team that far over the cap.

Couple that with the dramatic increase in the salary cap in the next two years after this one and you will see why they are taking advantage of restructures. The cap is projected to be above 140 million in two years.
Hmm, I've seen nothing to indicate that the cap is going to go up that much. In fact, the whole reason for the lockout was because the owners wanted to restrict the annual increases in the cap and protect against the dramatic increases that were occurring under the old CBA.

I think he may be referring to the supposed revenue escalators from TV deals and stuff. Aren't they supposed to kick in in a year or two or something?

I think i remember hearing 2014, is that what the cap is based off of? Thought it was a combination of things that would put it around 3-5 million increase per year. Not 20. If thats the case more power to them but i wouldnt mortgage the future. Theyre still 10 mill over with 40 or less on the roster. Doesnt sound good to me.

    OK, perhaps.

The old CBA never went up by more than $7M a year, so I really can't see it going up by $20M over 3 years (last year to 2014).

Regardless, they are already eating into that future cap space and costs are only going to rise, so no matter what, that's going to be that much less they are going to have to spend. As the cap goes up, so do player costs. They'll still have to keep pace and they'll need cap space to do so.

Now, Woodley, Taylor and Timmons are going to cost them even more in those years than originally planned.

So, yes, they can plan around it over time, but it's still cap space that they won't have to use.

Some guys potentially facing the chopping block:

LB Koa Misi...now that Miami is switching to the 4-3, he would be buried on the depth chart as a 4-3 DE and he's not really shown the ability to be a stand up OLB in the 4-3.

Eagles may be looking to drop Assante Samuel's contract.

Roman Harper may not be in the Saints plans for 2012.

Seahawks resign OT Breno Giacomini to a 2 year deal.

Koa Misi may not be a bad option. Just 25. He's out of Utah and was the Dolphins 2nd round pick in 2010. In 2 seasons he has amassed 6 sacks, just 1 last season, but maybe a guy worth looking at?

I wonder if Asante Samuel would welcome a return to New England, or if New England would welcome such a return?
