    Back up Quaterback.....

Do you think it would be wise to sign a veteran quarterback to back up Joe and/or tyrod or just stick with the two quarterback system.

Why would they spend the money on a veteran when they were comfortable with Tyrod as a rookie?

    Use it somewhere else.

If they could get them to come in for the league minimum I was not referring to spending a big contract on one lol.

I just don't see why even the 500k (I believe the vet min counts towards the cap). I'd rather use the roster spot for a skill guy somewhere. Or use any money towards protecting Joe. Just my opinion.

Think of Joe as the Raven's Cal Ripkin. I personally don't think they'll ever get him out of a game - ever - for any reason!

Vet min is a bit more than that, 810k for years 7-9, 910k for 10 or more or something along those lines.

In any case, nope I'd rather put the money towards something else usefull. If Joe goes down the season is over. There isn't anyone out there within a reasonable price that is going to take us anywhere, SO you have Taylor and see if he can get you to the playoffs on his legs and call it a day. Release whatever OLman got Joe killed that year and upgrade the position. Really all you can do.

I think Flacco missed not having a vet QB backup OR a QB coach last year. Now that they have a QB coach, I don't think the Ravens are gonna look for a vet QB.

If they were going to do this it would have been this year.
As it is, they were happy to have Tyrod as the backup.

Use that roster spot on a backup Olineman, depth is pretty thin there and injuries are common for linemen

    Re: Back up Quaterback.....

Their comfort level with Tyrod as a rookie was partly due to how good they thought Tyrod was...but also how bad they thought the available/affordable options were. My sense was that they liked him well enough to roll the dice with him as a back-up, but if there were options they liked, they would have made him the #3. At the time Bulger retired Ozzie was pondering names like Todd Bouman, Brian Brohm, Chris Simms, Troy Smith, J.T. O’Sullivan, Chad Pennington, Charlie Frye, Patrick Ramsey, Jim Sorji, J.P. Losman, and Brian St. Pierre. Veterans, yes, but not better than Taylor, not in Ozzie Newsome's estimation.

If there is a veteran on the market this off season who would clearly be a safer bet to step in, I wouldn't rule it out, as long as it is not insane money. They were willing to pay Bulger a lot as a back up because he was a valuable player--unlike the other names on the list, who were merely experienced clipboard holders.

I believe I recall Ozzie admitting they came close to making a move but in the end didn't feel it was enough of an upgrade.

There will be a couple of players, like Shaun Hill or Kyle Orton or Byron Leftwich, who I think are better than what was available in 2011. Better than Taylor? Debatable. Better than what was out there last year? Yes.

Tyrod with his year of pro experience should be OK. Would like to see a #3 QB taken late in the draft. Agree that the $ should be spent on O line!

If there's a backup QB out there on the street who can win you a Super Bowl, then he'll be starting some place.

I've said it many times but: there aren't even 32 legit starters on the 32 NFL teams. You sure as hell can't expect to have 2 on 1 team. Every now and again there's a Flynn or Cassel, but those are guys who were drafted. It's a thousand to one that a vet backup comes in and can maintain the level of winning Joe brings.

In short, if Joe goes down, we're done. As is true of everyone. 2011 Indy Colts anyone? That's pretty much everybody. Think the Steelers get anywhere with Charlie Batch at the helm?

TJ Yates was a 3rd string and had a hell of a defense and won and charlie batch would win a good amount of games with that defense so a better question would be if the team had no defense then a back up cant win but with a defense it is possible to be successful even though it is overshadowed by the defense
