Worse First Round Picks
I know it's pure speculation but what pick do you think was one of the worse and conversely who had a great pick (first two QBs aside).
Here's a couple
Browns - I was pretty surprised they traded 3 picks to get the RB they would've gotten anyway, and then sent a resounding vote of confidence to Colt McCoy by reaching for a QB.
Titans - Kendall Wright when there were solid defensive players availble - a huge need for themWorld Domination 3 Points at a Time!

Re: Worse First Round Picks
As much as I hate to say it, I like the Steelers pick. He looks like he just wants to take everyone out in front of him. I like lineman like that.

I really didn't like the Bears taking McClellin when there had only been one O-lineman taken at that point. The Bears are DESPERATE for o-line help and they could've had their pick of Reiff, DeCastro, Glenn, etc while McClellin isn't a natural fit in a 4-3. Feel the same way about the Jets. Seems like they would've improved their team a lot more by taking a solid RT or OG rather than taking on another high-risk project.

Brandon Weeden lol.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
I'm with you. Don't get that one at all. If the Browns passed who was going to take Weedon before they picked again in Round 2? You only take a 29 year old QB to play him and the only teams that need a QB to play right away are the Browns and Dolphins. Dolphins made their pick. Browns could have had Weedon at #37 and probably round 3.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Browns burning picks to move up a spot
Viking front office need a sales award with their constant smoke screens and rumours and stories.
On the other side I grudgingly like the Patriots and Steelers first rounds a lot

Seahawks. Took another 3rd round prospect (at best) in the 1st. 2nd year in a row they did that.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Agreed.
I think the Redskins scared the shite out of the Brownies by trading up ahead of them for RGIII so they were not going to let that happen again....thus they gave up draft picks for Trent Richardson when they probably didn't have to because they were scared about Tampa Bay trading up for him and they take Weeden in round 1 because they were scared that a team like Kansas City or Arizona would try and trade back up ahead of them and take Weeden. When it comes to quarterbacks, don't pay attention to stats; pay attention to guys who make crucial plays at crucial times. -Gil Brandt

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Bad picks to me are the teams that took players too high. Does not mean the guy won't justify the pick. Irvin by Seattle. The Jets pick. Weeden by the Browns and Martin by the Bucs. There were a lot of questionable picks during the middle rounds. It was like the draft was moving too fast and teams were panicking.

Every year during the draft it reminds me how lucky we are to have the Browns in the AFC North.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Honestly though, I think Harrison Smith was one of the worst picks in round 1. I can't believe Minny traded back up for him. No way Baltimore, Niners, Giants, or Broncos were going to take him in the bottom of round 1. The only team that may have was the Patriots and they had already spent their 1st rounders.
He's not a very good fit for their defense at all and with cornerback being a MAJOR hole in their secondary they could have stayed at 35 and gotten Jenkins or Boykin who project to be better corners than Harrison SMith projects as a safet and they still probably could have traded up into the bottom of the 2nd round and take Harrison Smith. When it comes to quarterbacks, don't pay attention to stats; pay attention to guys who make crucial plays at crucial times. -Gil Brandt

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Smith was the 2nd best safety in a bad safety class, so all in all it's not that bad (to me). I think the CB class is much deeper so they can still fill a need there.
Id wonder why they traded unless maybe they thought the Giants would nab him.

Weeden also, prob the most surprising pick of the draft so far!

Re: Worse First Round Picks
Bruce Irvin to Seattle and Brandon Weeden to the browns were my two head scratchers. Browns kept saying they were all in with McCoy then they go all in with Weeden?? I didn't see any mock drafts placing Irvin in the 1st round either.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
My best friend is a Dolphins fan and he's been trying to convince himself for months that they wouldn't take Tannehill round 1. He said if it does happen it confirms that the owner is one that thinks he knows something about football and is going to interfere. After the pick he told me he was so depressed he couldn't watch it anymore.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
I wouldn't be so quick to shit on the Browns.
I look at the Browns situation completely differently. I applaud them for moving up one spot to get Richardson. He was one of three elite talents in the draft. Had the Browns allowed the Bucs to leapfrog them to take Richardson, I'd be criticizing the Browns right now for missing out on a difference maker. Taking Blackmon instead at four would have been a bad deal for the Browns.
As for Weeden, I will wait and see. I think they could have gotten him later had they traded back and recouped some of what they spent to get Richardson. But I kind of like Weeden despite his age. I applaud the Browns for dumping McCoy rather than stringing that nonsense along for another year.
I also like what New England did, despite criticism I hear. I don't mind them giving up extra picks because I think they got two of the better players in the draft who could be cornerstones of that defense for a long time.
I'm not a big fan of the Chiefs taking Poe at 11. Don't see him as the next Haolti Ngata.

Re: Worse First Round Picks
R-title--
The Browns ability to screw up jello (and their drafting) seems to be epic, but is it possible that this is Holmgren's effort to put his stamp on the organization, "rebuild" over the next x number of seasons, and change the Cleveland culture? Not saying I think this is definitely what's happening, just trying to get some perspective on how the Browns appear to have a bad case of Snyder-itis!
