Rookies have now made themselves familiar with the Ravens’Owings Mills facility for the past three weeks and now that more experienced playershave began to practice once again, the speed has turned up a notch.
Nothing extremely exciting happened on this second day ofmedia availability for OTA’s, but there were a few notable pieces to passalong, mostly involving the wide receiver corps.
Roll Call:
Notable players not in attendance today included Anquan Boldin, Jah Reid, Haloti Ngata, Pernell McPhee, Vonta Leach, Marshall Yanda,Jimmy Smith, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed and BernardPollard.
The secondary was missing rookie cornerback Asa Jackson for the second straightweek as he continues to finish his education at Cal Poly. Cornerback Cary Williams was in attendance but wasnot participating in any team drills.
While in competition to take over Ben Grubbs’ vacated leftguard spot, Kelechi Osemele left thepractice field roughly ten minutes into the start of practice and jogged backto the locker room – he would later return to the field but didn’t participatein any further drills. John Harbaugh said following practice that K.O. suffereda few “bumps and bruises. “
Offensive Updates:
The major knock on JacobyJones when the Ravens signed him to a 2-year, $7 million deal was that hestruggled with doing the most important part of his job – catching the ball.
So far in his Ravens’ tenure, it’s been hard to argue withthat assessment.
Starting out practice, Jones worked alongside Torrey Smith and Dennis Pitta on the JUGS machine to improve his hands.Surprisingly, Jones attempted to catch many balls coming his way one-handed.
Last week, Jones dropped a ten-yard pass by Joe Flacco whileuncovered over the middle of the field. This week, while working on shortyardage plays via 7-on-7 drills, Jones once again dropped a simple pass - thistime a WR screen from Flacco.
When huddled next to other receivers, Tommy Streeter is a full helmet taller than his peers. Streeter hasbeen working out with Ray Lewis at his home in Boca Raton, Florida and waspraised for that following practice by Cam Cameron.
Streeter must improve mentally more than physically if hehas hopes to become a threat the Ravens drafted him to be. During routinetoe-dragging drills near the sideline, Streeter was thrown a ball and showedlittle effort to try to maintain both feet in bounds. Out of the entire widereceiver group, Streeter was the only player to look like they put littleeffort in the drill.
The 3rd wide receiver competition is going to bea good one because LaQuan Williamsis fighting for a spot just as he did last season as an undrafted free agent.
Williams made a great one-handed catch and caught atouchdown in the back of the end zone during full team drills. He’s fast, inshape, and has been about as productive as can be expected during an OTA.

Although he is highly unlikely to start the season third on the depth chart, sitting here in late May, Williams appears to be the third best WR on the field in Baltimore.

Defensive Updates:Last week, Harbaugh said that a few undrafted free agentswill have the chance to make the team, and linebacker Nigel Carr out of Alabama State is one I’ll be keeping my eye on alittle more.
It’s hard to really gauge a player during OTA’s, but Carr isplaying very fast and even had a decent hit during a routine drill in thebeginning of practice. He was very quick on his feet and covered very wellduring 7-on-7 drills.
Special TeamsUpdates:
Rookie kicker JustinTucker was in attendance after being signed earlier this week. Just as theydid with Billy Cundiff’s locker lastweek, the media surrounded Tucker’s this time around.
In the beginning of practice, Lardarius Webb was on the far field working on punt returns. Afterthe Ravens invested so much money into him last month, it’s unlikely they riskinjury to their premier cornerback but that doesn’t mean they aren’t going tokeep him sharp in the return game if called upon.
The Ravens next OTA open to the media will take place onWednesday, June 6th.
