Cary may not have played as well as Webb, and that may be why some fans undervalued him, but Cary could be the top corner on about a dozen teams around the league.
Well, that's not entirely true. Cary is 28 years old this year and while that's not THAT old for a cornerback, we're not talking about a guy who is coming off of a rookie contract, 25/26 years old, and entering his prime. He's a good player, but he's probably about as good as he is going to be. It may be in his best interests to re-sign with Baltimore. He's not going to land some mega "Darrell Revis" contract on the open market.

Cary Williams is a solid player that could be the odd man out, especially if Asa Jackson steps up as well as Webb has (or anywhere close). Cary sadly is not a nickel corner, he is an outside man or nothing, and Jimmy Smith being a first round pick with the talent he has is going to be playing on the outside at some point. If we can get Cary signed as a back up to Jimmy, then I'm all for it, but Cary may want to be a full time starter somewhere.

And BTW guys, check out this Christian Thompson kid. The guy has great size at 6'1 and is around 210 lbs, he hits hard, and has some ball skills, don't count him out just because he came from a small school, the Ravens picked him for a reason, when guys like Iloka and Markele Martin where available.

After this latest bit I've washed my hands of this Ed Reed stuff. Love the guy ON the field, but he if he sits he sits I just can't get worked up about his offseason tantrums anymore.

I cant see him holding out into more than the first 2 weeks of camp. You have to think Ray Lewis has been speaking to him and you think Ray will listen to Ed's BS like this.

This probably has a lot to do with him not wanting to come to camp period. and if you are a player like Ed Reed you really dont need camp and why risk injury. When the season starts he will be here. He wont leave 7Mil on the table because he knows he wont get close to that next year if he holds out into the season.

He has his football camp next week and I am sure he will address the media there and they will go hard on him and see if he is really bluffing.

Either way we are going to address the Safety postition next year via FA or Draft as we will have more cap space asuming we dont have to tag Flacco.

Re: The latest on Ed Reed

What Reed said on Twitter and last night is really up to each individual to decipher. If you like Ed, you have one view of what he said. If he's getting old and not worth the hassle, you have another.

The fact is that is he's still the 4th highest paid FS in the league and the 3 above him were signed at least a couple years after Ed's current deal. Not sure how he can feel disrespected when he set the bar at the time he signed the deal. http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/nf...each-position/

And what if the Ravens do renegotiate now? They'll be right back in this same boat near the end of that agreement when some other FS is making more per year than him.. Or worse.. if he decides to retire and all of the bonus money they'd have to pay up front would come on the Salary Cap.

A few lines from his diatribe last night which made me go "hmmm":

""I've exceeded expectations" Not really.. you've met them. You were the top paid FS when you signed the contract you SHOULD have played like it.

"This is not about money.. this is about business" What? So you're cool with the salary you're making you want better working conditions or benefits?

Don't get me wrong, I don't begrudge Ed his money. But no one held a gun to his head and told him to sign.

I think the most likely scenario is the one mentioned earlier in this thread.. That Ed plays this season and then is not resigned.. ending up playing for a lot less in New England.

How can he be released with his contract expiring in 2013?

Why does everyone think NE would be a landing spot for him?

I know Belichick and Brady were fawning over him in "A Football Life" but Belichick isn't known for signing aged vets. Sure, he has kicked the tires on players like Ochocinco, but that was a far reduced rate.

So for Reed to go to NE, he'd have to first get the offer and then agree to a greatly reduced salary.

I'm not seeing it. He's going to test the market and see he isn't nearly as worth as he thinks he is.

Just off the top of my head Rodney Harrison, Junior Seau, Derrick Burgess, Andre Carter..... Guys that were not exactly spring chickens when they signed with New England. And I am sure there are more.

Which is why I gave the caveat of a "greatly reduced price".

Reed wants MORE money, not less.

With all we've been through with Ed over the years...it is incredibly sad that he is probably going to go out the way this is heading.

I listened to his interview last night with his shill Glenn. He knows Reed from way back when Reed lived in the Apartment Complex in Owings as Glenn's good friends B.S. and B.D.. Glenn gave Reed a total ball washing last night and I found it pitiful. I really am getting pissed at Reed, his whining and his, "I dont care what the fans think". He is becoming Brett Favre in GB. Time to cut him and go with next man up!

He has become the common cancer of sports atheletes. He's old, always hurt misses as many tackles as he makes. intercepts as less than he gets burned. He is average at best.Plus he's an attention whore.Trade him for some draft picks Send him to the jets he would fit right in.

Yup. He's been one of the best to wear the uniform, but the guy has issues that will make it very difficult for a graceful separation from the team, when the time comes.

Ed Reed is taking the end of his career very hard.

Re: The latest on Ed Reed

Here is a sad thing with Pro Sports Players. It is very sad. They have trouble adjusting to "when the crowd stops" meaning when they are not playing and waking up one Sunday morning and not hearing the crowd or being in a stadium, it just hits them. This happens to NBA Players a lot as well. I think the reality of this is effecting Ed and he is taking it out this way. It is going to be rough for him when he does call it quits or sees that no team wants to sign him. Some players can adjust, but from what I am seeing I dont think Ed can.

Think about it, If he really wanted a new contract he would hire an agent or call Oz as his own agent and ask to talk about one. It is all logic here. Very few players can act as their own agent and Ed is not one of them. I just think he knows the end is near for him and it is effecting him mentally. But when opening game comes that all goes away, it is just the offseason that is hard because there is nothing for him to do.

Look he said he saw Ronnie Lott and Eric Wright and that motivated him, that is probably for the better because they both played until the twilight of their careers and prob gave ed some advise.

I think he skips half of camp and shows up by the 3rd pre season game unless Ray or someone tell him to get his act together (which I am sure already happened)

As for Cary Williams, The ravens prob offered him around 4-5 per year and he in my view is worth 5-6 per year. They cant put to much money into the CB position when they have younger guys who can hopefully step up and take the 3 and 4 spot. Plus I would not be surprised to see a vet CB signing next year to play the 3 to give the younger guys one more year to develop.

Cary Williams is solid, but he aint good enough for 5 or even 4 million a year IMO.
