It's amazing what Suggs does at his size, he looks around 290-300 lbs, he is a massive guy, but just an athletic freak. So much for having "athletic issues" before being drafted.

His wife is 9 months pregnant. Might have something to do with it.

Mckinnie wasnt out there today either. Thats probably a conditioning issue.

The team said it's unrelated to his wife's pregnancy.

Edit: Found this from our friends at 24x7

Harbaugh also said that Haloti Ngata tweaked his hamstring during conditioning Drills. Ramon hardwood rolled his ankle.

John Harbaugh said that Bryant McKinnie is dealing with personal issue and he's not sure when he'll report.

Upshaw will drop weight by default, during training camp. He will also drop weight, by default, during the season. It is difficult for even the best players to maintain their weight during the season.

Re: Camp notes ~ daily updates

So, why is McKinnie still on the roster?

Noone is commenting, but it sounds like something really shady is going on with him and Harbaugh isn't happy with him. Oher is seemingly going to be our LT this year and unless McKinnie shapes up, someone else will be our starting RT.

Don't quote me on this, please, but I think that Bryant McKinnie is dealing with a family issue.

Idk, but i would think if it was a family issue Harbs would have said that and wouldnt have said Michael Oher is the LT and we are looking for a RT. Dont know whats going on with Mckinnie but i heard he failed the conditioning test, now this, obviously Harbs isnt happy with him. I'll try to withhold my judgement but equally as large Bobbie Williams dropped 12 lbs and passed his conditioning test with "flying colors"

Wait? Harbaugh has said that we are looking for a right tackle? Sounds like McKinnie's place in the team is in serious danger right now.

But he failed his conditioning test so he would have had to have been in Owings Mills at some point unless the reports of him failing his test are not true.

It wont make sense for him to fail his test than have a representiive of his call Harbaugh and say he is dealing with an issue...

There are conflicting reports and it makes no sense that Mikinnie would fail his test today then leave to deal with an "issue". My guess is he never took the test and is dealing with a legal or family issue. You have to think logic here, there is no way he would take the test today and then have a rep call Harbs and say Mickinne is dealing with an issue so he wont be at camp.

Bottom Line is we need to sign or trade for a LT/RT

I would say after camp Upshaw goes is closer to 270 and maybe close to 275 already after all of the off season workouts.

At Upshaw's height (approx 6'2"), IMO, the ideal weight for him would probably be 260-265lbs.

Upshaw is a stout guy. He carries weight well and he's got massive thighs, shoulders, and arms.

The only reason why I think he'd be more effective in the long run at a lower weight is because he is not a natural quick-twitch athlete. Being a quick-twitch athlete has nothing to do with how big or small you are because guys like Wilfork, who is fat as shit, have insanely quick feet for their size. Upshaw doesn't have that elite burst off the line, so dropping some body mass will potentially give him some added quickness.

Suggs is also nearly 2" taller than Upshaw. That makes a difference.

Actually, Suggs is a good example of a guy who is not a natural quick-twitch athlete. A few years ago he played around 275lbs and he had arguably the worst season in his career. He just couldn't get off the ball quick enough and he had a tough time changing direction. He dropped his weight down to 255-260lbs and he puts up back-to-back seasons with double digit sacks, two pro-bowl seasons, and a DPOY.

Aaron Wilson just posted that Ngata was placed on the Active PUP list.

How is that different that the "regular" PUP list?

The problem I see with this is that McKinnie didn't talk to Harbs or anyone at all. Someone "representing" McKinnie informed Harbaugh that he was dealing with personal issues and wasn't sure when he'd show up to camp.

KO may find himself competing with Jah for the RT position.

Active PUP means he can be reactivated at any point, but can't be put on the 6 week PUP to start the season.

I'm not sure there's a difference. Players have to be put on the PUP at the beginning of camp. They can be taken off at any time during camp. If a player ends camp on PUP, they are out for 6-8 weeks. Weeks 6-8, team has choice to activate or, after 8th week, move them to IR.

Ngata on PUP just means since he didn't pass conditioning test, he's listed there. Allows us to use PUP in case his hamstring lingers and we need a camp body, or even *gulp* a replacement for start of the season.

I wouldn't read much into it, I'm betting he's back in action by the end of next week.
