Yeah, we may need to invest in a backup. Rainey looked good though, that TD catch and run was a beauty.

So am I. Really disappointed with AA. Thought he was the heir apparent to Ricky Williams.

    He is terrible.

Runs high, with his head down. No vision. No moves. Just ducks his head and runs straight ahead.

Can't pick up a relatively easy blitz. Dropped an easy 1st down catch for the cherry on top.

He isn't an NFL running back, and won't be around much longer. Rainey will take his roster spot.

I'd like to see what Benson has left in the tank. Bring him and Grant in for a tryout.

Stinks that we didn't put Pierce on PUP at the beginning of camp. I don't think he's practiced once, and if he can't go through the rest of camp, he could've started the season on PUP. Now, it's roster or IR for him, nothing else.

Everybody is saying Rainey, who i agree looked good, but i didnt see a drop off with Berry either. In fact he offers the change of pace back we need. It may come down to Kick Return ability. both did decent in that regard as well. tight race worth watching. AA is the one on the outs for sure though.

Right now AA won't make the 53. The only gross error that he didn't make vs. ATL was a turnover.

Rainey >> AA ...unless they both go 180 next week.

If they're going to do something they better hurry up if they want their choice. Ryan Matthews has a broken collarbone out 4-6.

AA looked scared to get hit. I don't see how he makes the 53 with a repeated performance like that.

He's the one guy that I felt actually played himself off the team after one game. I think I'm just plain mad at him too.

I have no doubt about that.

I really hope Pierce gets his shit together with a quickness. I liked what I saw out of Damien Berry, but I don't know that he could do those things against #1's. Maybe.

Rice, Pierce, Rainey, & Berry wouldn't be too too bad in the grand scheme of things...but I'd like to see them look at bringing in Joe Addai and/or Cedric Benson for competition's sake.

i reallly need to see pierce play. Because hes going to get a spot unless hes IR'd for some reason, which means a vet just bumps Rainey/Berry both off. i was hoping Berry would get a couple snaps against the 2nd team as well. In all honesty RB transitions pretty well between the teams. If theres a hole and he hits it, it should be similar results. I think he looked good and ran hard and moved piles. with pierce injured hes the likely change of pace back, not rainey, even though rainey may have more upside long term.

The Pierce situation needs to be closely monitored at this point. He is a good back but the injury history is a huge concern. And we all know how fickle hamstrings can be, he might be still out for a while.

If all else fails pick up someone off the scrap heap or go with the young guys.

I'm not going to lie, as bad as AA looked, I'm inches from being converted to the thread title. He blew chunks.

I'm in the twilight zone on this matter now. Would it be so bad if Berry, Rainey, and Pierce were a rotating #2? Just launching out thoughts here. I look at it that if there is a short yardage/spell need any, that RB has "the hammer" out there. He is also known as Vontae Leach. I was just thinking back to the San Fran game when they showed Leach coaching up Rice. He may be the wildcard in it all possibly. He makes backs better.

Re: I'm now firmly in the "we need to look at picking up a backup RB" camp

Rice was productive behind a so so blocking FB before leach got here. Leach is a god damn good FB, arguably in the Lorenzo Neal/Tony Richardson class of lead blockers. But going by how disappointing AA looked in that game last night, not even Leach could make AA better.

Damien Berry looks to be a good option as the short distance back, but I don't know how he'd look against the first team defenses as Wicked said.

    Ryan Grant please.

Don't need 4 pages of this. RB's are a dime a dozen. RR is your featured #1. After the 3rd preseason game you can have your pick of many for about a mil. I saw nothing last night that impressed me from any of them that if RR goes down I would feel comfortable. If that happens it will be all on Joes arm.

You kind of expect that when all our back ups are undrafted players, apart frim Bernard Pierce who can't seem to get on the field with his injury issues.

Re: I'm now firmly in the "we need to look at picking up a backup RB" camp

RR is a tough shoe to fill. There probably aren't many that we would embrace if he went down. I would like a big strong back like RW was last year with experience. When RR needs a break I don't want a guy just to fill in for a play or two. I want someone who will step it up a notch and make somethng good happen.

If Rice goes down there is no replacing him as we all know. Until Pierce can get on the field would prefer to see Berry and Rainey get more playing time and see what we have with them. Unless something drastically changes with Allen I would be shocked if he makes the team. Hopefully Pierce can get back soon, if he ends up IR'd for some reason then you bring in one of the dime a dozen vet RB that are out there. While I was dissapointed in the performance of Allen, I was pretty happy with how Berry and Rainey played and think if Pierce can get back and can play up to his talent level, this is going to be a young backfield but one of the best and deepest backfields we have had in a while with a number of different guys who bring different things to the table....

Its not all bad...lets see what happens with Pierce
