Re: Ravens could be trading Cary Williams?
If one of us posted speculation that trading Cary to Indy for Freeney and/or a draft pick could happen, it would probably be a dumb thread. But since it is in response to actual speculation -- somehow national writers are suggesting it adds up -- that makes it worthy of debate (debunk?) I think.
Not that I'm saying the rumor is more legit because some national site posted it. I still think it's an unlikely fit. The biggest reason it doesn't add up for me has not been mentioned. And that has to do with Irsay's actually comments that got everyone's panties in a bunch...
No offense to Cary, but he doesn't fit the bill. Most Colts fans would react with, "Cary Who?" I have to believe the player is an older, better known name. Someone who maybe is ready to be replaced by a younger player somewhere. Corner and tackle would be the obvious areas of need for the Colts.SERIOUS TRADE WINDS Swirling! We're talking given up high pick for SERIOUS Vet/Starter!.. these deals often crumble n don't reach completion
Irsay also comes out and says draft pick. So talk of Freeney for Williams seem to be speculation gone awry -- why mention high draft pick if they were really talking about the ultra-rare NFL player-for-player trade?
I understand the speculation. Cary was one of Pagano's favorites. And Cary didn't commit to stay with the Ravens. And Freeney would be a need for the Ravens. And he's in the last year of a deal. And the Colts seem to be in rebuilding mode. The circumstances make sense. But they don't match Irsay's statement.
Besides, there are complications with the idea, many of which have already been mentioned above. Freeney is due $14 million. So it would take a lot to fit him in -- an extension to a 32-year old at a reduced salary. Cutting McKinnie and Cundiff and more.
And consider the Ravens already made an offer for Cary to stay three more years at a decent salary. They see a role for him. Why would they suddenly decide they don't need him? Who steps in as the third CB, and first back-up to Smith and Webb? I don't see the guy who has played so well in camp that they'd be embolded to replace what Williams gives them.
If Ricky Williams were still here, and you had Rice and Pierce and Berry and Rainey all playing at a high level alongside him, then it's a player like Williams that you could see them trading. That's the kind of SERIOUS name that a dope like Irsay would not be able to keep his pie hole shut about. Not a Cary Williams.
But, supposing they had a chance to trade Cary. Gorrer is probably the closest to being Next Man Up, and half of the board on the 53-man roster thread has Gorrer not making the team. Do you really think the Ravens would be comfortable with that scenario, especially given the fact they play a third corner about 50% of the snaps?
And finally, it doesn't make sense for the Colts. Getting better at corner by weakening your pass rush is a wash. Without a pass rush, upgrading at corner may not give them anything.Last edited by Shas; 08-24-2012 at 03:31 PM.

"...We're talking given up high pick for SERIOUS Vet/Starter!"
"...I have no intention of moving the goddamn team."
Two sentences.
Two guys named Irsay.
Two stabs at the truth.
9 "words" in each sentence.
Coincidence???
I think not!!!!

LOL.
A father who couldn't put down his high ball before he made a spectacle of himself on the six o'clock news, talking about plans for the team that may or may not happen.

Re: Ravens could be trading Cary Williams?
I haven't followed either Indy or Miami closely, but in reading this article, I'm a little confused.
It says on the one hand, "By shopping two picks -- including a 2013 second-rounder -- to the Miami Dolphins for cornerback Vontae Davis, the Colts are shedding visions of a long-term rebuild in favor of winning now." [bold and ital are mine]
Then it seems to say OTOH, "The Dolphins have essentially packaged away their nickel corner for what might become a near first-round selection in next year's draft."
I'm laboring under the impression that the Indy franchise is not viewed to be the juggernaut of the AFCS, much less the AFC period! How does Irsay see them as "winning now" by trading what will likely be quality positions in the draft for a supposedly hard-to-motivate corner?

Re: Ravens could be trading Cary Williams?
I was about to laude Irsay for taking his medicine this year and trying to rebuild around Luck, smartly through the draft, and with under the radar FAs, that would fit scheme.
Little did I know this guy is bat spit crazy.
