Report via WNST: Breer of NFLN Compares Art Modell to Joe Paterno

Taking the NFL out of Baltimore by Irsay pittance in emotion to what happened to Cleveland. Albert Grier forgets that the NFL drove the CFL out with the orchestrated move by them that Modell took the fall for.

    1. Can you clarify what you meant to put in the title? Because the title alone is awfully confusing. I will edit.

    2. Link?

The nfl network expert Albert Grier used to defend keeping Art Modell out of the hall of fame is Arts choice to move the Browns here is like Paterno decision to cover up sex abuse. On radio no link.

So where does NST come into this? Is that where you heard it?

Look at the outcome from the move CFL left the US, just when we were dominating the league.

Re: Report via WNST: Grier of NFLN Compares Art Modell to Joe Paterno

I saw something like this in an article, but it copped out by saying afterwards "well, Joe's wrong was worse, but..."

    Let me find it...

This is actually by Jeff Passan of Yahoo, but here:

    http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl---f...d-s-soul-.html

A man is defined by the body of his actions, and to ignore the effect Modell's selfishness had on a city that loved football, loved its team and needlessly had both thieved is the worst sort of revisionism, the sort in which Joe Paterno's supporters engage: don't let the defining moment of the man's life color all of the good things he did.

While his sin was nowhere near as egregious as Paterno's, Modell did slim-jim his way into the Baltimore market through backdoor politicking, vote-rigging and shady 1 percenter maneuvers.

I don't know if it is just me, but I am having a really hard time understanding you.
If they ever tell my story, let them say I walked with giants. Let them say I lived in the time of Ray Lewis, tamer of Running Backs. Let them say I lived in the time of Ed Reed.

WNST tried to gently bring the Baltimore side has never been heard in either move. The NFL Network response got crazier and crazier how we didn't matter to the history of the league.

When the Colts left Baltimore NOBODY cared because Football only matters in Ohio.

Uhhh .... ok, so where does Grier or NFLN come into this?

I read the article and it's written by a dude who grew up in Cleveland.

He was on the radio trying to defend some of these talking points on why Baltimore situation isn't comparable to Cleveland situation where they were wronged and we weren't. Also Modell will never make it to the HOF.

Ok...I just listened to Breer's interview, and I can see why it would piss people off.

Breer in the interview tried to say he was objective, but he certainly leans towards the Cleveland POV.

    Highlights...

-Breer feels that no matter what else Art did, his defining moment...what he is and will always be known for by the casual, fan/person is moving the Browns out of Cleveland
-He feels that the Browns are one of those iconic franchises that should never be moved and should always be associated with their city and if you buy one of those teams, there is an implicit agreement to never move the team...examples he gave are the Canadians/Maple Leafs in the NHL, the Red Sox in baseball.
-He basically made Cleveland and Ohio out to be the birthplace of football..."there is a reason the Hall of Fame is in Canton Ohio"
-When Glenn brought up the point that other owners that have moved their teams are in the HOF, Breer basically said that he could not think of a franchise as iconic as the Browns leaving...Glenn brought up that many in Baltimore would argue that the Colts should have been on that level, Breer disagreed.
-Glenn tried to explain that we are frustrated by the lack of knowledge about how many good/great things Art did for the city of Baltimore and even Cleveland when he was there, and that is where the comparison to Paterno happened...he said that with the way Glenn (and basically Art fans) defend him by harping on all the great things he did while barely acknowledging the move, it sounds like those Penn State fans defending all the great things Paterno did while trying to pass the blame to others. He tried to drive home the point that he wasn't comparing the acts...just the fact that one single bad/awful choice can overwrite all the good deeds and that you can't ignore or try and brush the move aside.
-He made the point that if you go to Indianapolis, those fans all speak glowingly about the Irsays and all the great things they did in that community and if one of us were to be thrown in that conversation, we'd be throwing up all over the place. That was how Cleveland feels.
-Basically he said that if he were to write his obituary, the move would be prominent somewhere in the first 2 paragraphs...he'd definitely include all of the good things, but he doesn't feel that the move should just be a footnote or something at the very end of it.

Thx driving from Jersey misheard the name. Just needed to vent so I wouldn't run off the road. Thanks for the therapy.

It sure didn't sound like Albert Breer who is a straight reporter. I've never heard of him writing a column. Thanks for the clarification.
