OWINGS MILLS — The rising draft stock of Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston ascended to another level this week as he impressed NFL scouts again with yet another stellar workout.

The Buckeyes star improved upon his scouting combine numbers by running a consensus 4.58 in the 40-yard dash, nearly a half-second faster than his times last month in Indianapolis.

He also set a personal best with a 42-inch vertical leap.

The Detroit native is regarded as a virtual lock to be selected in the top 10 picks in April’s draft. If available, he’s a player that the Baltimore Ravens would likely consider for the eighth overall pick of the first round.

Gholston, who recorded a school-record 14 sacks last year, slightly tweaked his hamstring in the middle of his 40-yard dash at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Gholston has scheduled private workouts for the Miami Dolphins, who own the first overall pick of the draft, and the New York Jets, who pick sixth, on Monday.

At the scouting combine, Gholston bench pressed 225 pounds 37 times.

"I’ve been working, constantly trying to get better," Gholston told Ohio reporters. "A lot of people said I did well at the combine, but I came back here and got right back to work on my drills.

"As long as you’re working, you expect good things to happen. I’m one of those people that when I get into something, I’m fully into it and I’m not holding back."
