Arthur Brown was in uniform for the Ravens’ second OTA practice of the offseason; however, he didn’t have a helmet and was wearing glasses.
When asked about Brown not participating, head coach John Harbaugh disclosed that Brown had recently undergone sports hernia surgery shortly after rookie mini camp. Harbaugh did seem optimistic that Brown should make a full recovery, stating, “he should be fine soon enough.”
Sports hernia surgeries require a four to six week recovery period according to Harbaugh, meaning that Brown will miss OTAs and likely mandatory mini camp from June 11 – 13. Brown should be expected to participate in training camp as rookies report on July 21.
The Ravens are already thin at middle linebacker and hearing that Brown had to undergo any procedure is discouraging given the lack of depth within the group. The Ravens gave up fifth and sixth round picks to trade up six spots to select Brown in the second round (56th overall). Brown was figured to be a late-first round to early-second round pick but slid during the second day of the draft.
The former Kansas State star is expected to start alongside Jameel McClain, who was present for OTAs but is recovering from a spinal cord contusion suffered in a game against the Redskins last season.
Harbaugh stated that he was “very encouraged” for both McClain and cornerback Lardarius Webb (ACL) during their recovery periods.
“They have done a great job with their rehab. They have had no setbacks, so they are on schedule.”
