IT’S PREDICTION TIME: Ravens v. Jets

The Ravens v. the Jets…

Those words alone suggest a physical, sloppily played defensive struggle that isn’t for the faint-of-heart fantasy footballer and is likely to be won by the team that wins the turnover battle.

The Jets feature the league’s best run-defense yielding a stingy 73.2 yards per game while the Ravens feature the league’s 27th best rushing attack, plowing through at a pace of 83.2 yards per game. Just as the numbers last week suggested that the Ravens should establish the run against the Bears 31st ranked rushing defense, this week they suggest that the effectiveness of the Ravens offense will rest on the right arm of Joe Flacco.

Flacco is (2-0) against the Jets but to say that he’s responsible for the wins when taking on Rex Ryan’s Gang Green is akin to crediting the Orioles Chris Tillman for two victories against the Yankees despite a 6.00 ERA.

The last time Flacco faced the Jets at M&T he was 10 of 31 for 163 yards, a pick 6 and a lost fumble for a passer rating of 37.4. At one point Flacco had 12 consecutive incomplete passes spanning the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Flacco is still looking for his first career TD pass against the Jets and of the 44 points scored in his two games against them the Ravens offense has produced only two touchdowns. Flacco’s career passer rating against the Jets is 51.8.

Similarly the Jets offense has beaten their collective head against the wall trying to score on the Ravens. During those two games the Jets offense has yet to score a touchdown. Their 26 total points have come via special teams and defensive scores. Mark Sanchez during those contests was 21 of 56 for 193 yards, 0 TD and a pick six (Lardarius Webb) for a rating of 40.3.

This time around it will be rookie Geno Smith behind center for the Jets. Smith has been inconsistent as indicated by his 48th best passer rating of 65.1 (Joe Flacco is 40th with a 75.3 rating). He is second only to Eli Manning (17) in interceptions with 16 picks. He is tied for second in the league with 8 fumbles, 4 of which he’s lost.

OTHER NOTES

  • The Ravens have beaten the Jets 7 consecutive times
  • The Ravens are (-5) on the season in turnover differential v. the Jets at (-13)
  • The Jets’ defense is ranked 8th overall but ranked 27th in points/game (26.8)
  • The Jets are ranked 24th in red zone defense and 30th in total penalties (80)

BOLD PREDICTIONS

  • Joe Flacco throws for 250 yards and 2 TD’s, his first v. NY Jets
  • A Ravens linebacker has a pick 6
  • The Ravens will not average more than 2.5 yards per carry
  • Chris Ivory will double the rushing yardage of Ray Rice
  • Geno Smith will be responsible for 3 or more turnovers
  • Daryl Smith will get 2 sacks today
  • The halftime score will be 7-3 Ravens
  • The Ravens will score a TD from 60+ yards out

GAME PREDICTION

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see how this game will play out. The outcome will be based on defense and the battle of turnovers and during the Ravens history at M&T Bank Stadium that kind of game almost always goes their way. Today will be no different.

Look for the Ravens to make a couple of big plays on offense surrounded by many that will try your patience. But mostly, this will be a game where defensive coordinator Dean Pees will call upon his inner-exotic self and dial up some confusion for Geno Smith who for all intents and purposes is a turnover machine when he’s contained in the pocket. Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil and Courtney Upshaw combined for a poor outing holding down the edges in Chicago last week. That will change today to the dismay of the visitors.

The Ravens have seen streaks end this season. They were 11-0 against the Browns and 5-0 after byes during the Harbaugh Era. Those streaks ended. The 7-game winning streak against the Jets will not.

Last Game: 0-1 v. Winner, 0-0-1 v. Spread
Season Total: 4-6 v. Winner, 5-4-1 v. Spread
