Kruger and Ellerbe would be gone even if Flacco was playing for free

Oh what a world we live in. When certain people say something these days they do so hoping that all they need to do is say it enough for it to become true.

Since Joe Flacco signed his new deal, the national media has made it a point to say every aspect of every loss the Ravens have had in free agency is due to Flacco’s $120 million contract.  The worst offenders were probably ESPN who ironically, earlier this week introduced Ray Lewis as their new analyst. You would have thought that hiring Lewis would have offered some insight into what has happened from Ray Lewis instead of creating false prophets about the Ravens’ money situation.

It’s been more of the same from media and fans alike with every new departure from the team.

Let me inform you people of something you need to know about the situation of Flacco…and that of the Ravens.

Dannell Ellerbe was never going to see a 5-year $35 million contract from the Baltimore Ravens under any circumstance; he’s a player that hasn’t been a full year starter in his career with the Ravens.

Paul Kruger was not going to have a 5-year $40 million contract from the Ravens as a player that has been a rotational guy for his entire 4-year career.

The Ravens were $12 million under the cap after Flacco signed.

Anquan Boldin, who got traded to the San Francisco 49ers, could have easily fit into the Ravens’ plans this year but the team decided not to do that.

And even though I was a fan of Boldin and was happy he got his ring here as a Raven, this may bode well for Flacco in the future as he doesn’t have to hear dumb statements from people about how he “would throw jump balls to Boldin and hope he catches it.”

It’s amazing how people will go to any length these days to discredit Flacco but he is a SUPER BOWL CHAMPION and a MVP, so Flacco and Ravens nation get the last laugh.

So to all the naysayers questioning the Ravens front office for not paying 35 and 40 million dollars to LB’s who were never full time player, why don’t you guys come back in two years and we will laugh together about the Browns and Dolphins signing those players for that amount and we will discuss why those teams are almost always near the bottom of the NFL and why Baltimore is always at the top.

You are right on. Besides Anquan Boldin none of these departures cause me any anguish. Ed Reed still being a Ball Hawk, he only has one good arm left.

  2. Ashton VSG on said:

This is a straw man argument. The fact is that there are very fans criticizing the Ravens for not signing Kruger or Ellerbee. The criticism has been directed to trading Boldin, not signing Ed Reed, and cutting Pollard. And the Pollard cut has nothing to do with cap savings.

Again…Ozzie didn’t have a bad nights sleep and get up angry and decide to get rid of Pollard, “Q” or anyone else. Ozzie and the front office have a plan in place, now and for the future.

Would I love for “Q” to be here, absolutley…but I also know that those of us that have never been an NFL GM, Owner, Coach etc., do not know everything that is going on in Owings Mills. Even if we did, we still wouldn’t have much as a clue as we are not qualified !!!

Didn’t say that you did. You took Raven fans to task for complaining about not resigning Ellerbee & Kruger. I argue that is not true and unfair – fans are not complaining about those nonsignings – their complaints are about Boldin, Reed, & Pollard.

Great article! Thanks! I am so tired of trying to explain the structure of Joe’s contract to people it’s not funny! They don’t want to hear it.

Ozzie needs to go n get Boldin and pollard back they were the resons we made it to the superbowl Q hands and B.P big hits is what took us all the way so someone messed up bad or should I say Big time Besaids the took a 6th round pick for Q like he’s trash come on man the boy is a beast we should of got a sceond or 3rd round pick if anything. I hope the 49ers win it all next year and my boy Q aka Boldin is the m.v.p and he comes back in the end to bite the Ravens in the Rear. Q’s forever a Raven 81 what

Pollard can’t cover in a pass happy NFL…and he has worn out his welcome in KC, Houston and here with his rants and raves in the locker and on the practice field. If you watched Pollard in the Super Bowl, he couldn’t cover my grandmother…he had one big hit, and that is all anyone remembers. If he didn’t hit in this league, he would have been out of a job a long time ago. I haven’t heard of anyone knocking on his door to sign him…and they can get him cheap right now !!!

Look, I like “Q”, but the only other offer we got was a 7th round pick from the Vikings. I guess we could have just let him become an FA and got nothing. We will miss him, until someone else steps up…just like Derek Mason, Jason Brown, Ben Grubbs, Kelly Gregg, Jarrett Johnson, Todd Heap…and the list goes on…it’s the way of the NFL.

Wait’ll next year. 92 & 55 @ 25mil will be cut if they don’t produce any better than in ’12. Article is right on. Be a better team in ’13. That doesn’t mean XLVIII. Check our schedule.

Would you concede the point that the more a team spends on one side of the ball the less it has to spend on the other???

PS…Sound reasoning Wola, and I agree w/your arguments and Ozzie’s decisions on the players, but my mantra for the time being is … I blame Joe. lol
    Thanks.

I’ve been trying to tell folk on sites such as Fox45, WJZ, facebook as well as face to face that Flacco’s contract is NOT the reason why the Ravens have lost so many players so far this off season. While I was initially shocked about the Boldin trade, I understood and got over it the same day Also, I’ve commentators on espn as well as the NFL Network blame Flacco’s contract for the Ravens losi g players and I almost threw stuff at the tv because of it. In Ozzie, I trust is all that I have to say!

  9. Tgun42 on said:

Very smart Point of view. One contract does not effect the Ravens aproach of what they value another player. We would have been stupid to overpay for any of those contracts. In fact , I like the two vetrs we were able to get with Canty and Spears. To me we have already upgraded. If we can get Dumerville and then draft a good young MLB with Reed coming back. Oh BOy!

  10. Ravenwoman on said:

I couldn’t agree more with what you said. For the life of me, I just don’t know why people in this town treat Joe Flacco as if he is Kyle Boller! Talk about having a target on your back. We have one of the best QBs in the entire NFL. He will only get better under a new offense. He delivered us a Super Bowl with a defense that was below average last year. We lost players because we have a very astute front office that knows just how lucky we were to win a Super Bowl and knows that we can’t win with that group of players ever again.

  11. what3rd on said:

I guess that we can stop blaming George Bush for everything that goes wrong and blame Joe. North Korea… Joe Flaco’s fault

Best Article and most true. That is what I have been trying to tell all of the morons who talk trash and dont know football at all. Thank You

Ravens will handle their business I promise we will make the playoffs. The rest will be in the hands of the team that is formed by Ozzie and company.
