Mark Viviano - sports director for WJZ.

Hunter filling in admirably for Manfra on WBAL

If you’ve been listening to the O’s on 1090 AM WBAL (or trying to through the static) you’ve probably noticed that veteran broadcaster Fred Manfra has been missing from the booth. Manfra underwent hip replacement surgery last week and is expected to miss a minimum of three weeks.

O’s Xtra host Jim Hunter has filled in for Manfra on the radio broadcasts with Joe Angel. Aside from his love for all things New Jersey, I’ve enjoyed Hunter’s commentary and think it sounds more natural in its conversational style than when he fills in for Gary Thorne on MASN.

It should come as no surprise that Hunter has a background in radio, calling the “Game of the Week” on CBS Radio from 1986 to 1996 prior to coming to Baltimore.

With Hunter away the desk, Tom Davis has been filling in for the pre and postgame duties with Rick Dempsey. Former pitcher Dave Johnson will also be used on radio when Hunter calls games for Gary Thorne on TV.

Viviano to be honored at Preakness

WJZ sportscaster and my personal favorite former local sports talker Mark Viviano will receive the 2014 Old Hilltop Award for excellence in thoroughbred horse racing coverage at the Preakness. Viviano is covering the event for the 17th season and will be honored at the Alibi Breakfast prior to the race.

Viv is most notably remembered as the reporter who broke the news of the Cleveland Browns moving to Baltimore in November of 1995.

You can watch the race on JZ’s competitor, channel 11 WBAL on May 15.

Local sports blog seeks $400,000

Local sports blog Baltimore Sports and Life is looking to raise $400,000 in donations between now and July 31st. Chris Stoner, BSL’s owner, tells his readers that half of the total raised will be equally split among four charities, Suicide Prevention Education Awareness for Kids, Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Operation Second Chance the Brigance Brigade.

Chris Stoner, BSL’s owner, presented the plan in a UPS style white board YouTube video in which he discussed his company’s strategy to compete with 105.7 The Fan, WNST, The Baltimore Sun, PressBox, MASN and CSN Baltimore. “Our belief is that we can immediately compete with the existing leaders if we can increase awareness, add locally known contributing talent and move towards 40+ hours of weekly streaming content.”

BSL already produces a two hour daily live streaming show on BlogTalkRadio.com, The Lance Rinker Show, as well as Sports Tonight with Rob and Mike on Tuesday through Thursday evenings.

Stoner is offering to pay back donations at 1.5 times their value by July 31, 2017.

Interestingly, donations are being accepted via PayPal to Stoner’s personal account, rather than through a site like Kickstarter.com or FundAnything.com.

You must love numbers if you like Hunter. He can’t get through a sentence without providing an obscure baseball statistic. I can’t listen to him.

I agree that Hunter is unlistenable. He talks like he’s a celebrity anyone cares about and he can not identify a single pitch thrown. All he ever says is, “[pitcher name] deals and it’s low for a ball.” Most competent radio guys will have at least a basic understanding of pitches thrown.
