Last week, Patriots QB Tom Brady restructured his contract to lower his 2013 Salary Cap number in order to help his team create some additional Salary Cap space.  Brady’s restructure removed him from the top 5 2013 Cap numbers for quarterbacks and caused an $880K reduction in the tender amount for the Exclusive Franchise Tag.  As of that time, the amount of the Exclusive Tag was $19.583M.

Today, news broke that the long-awaited Ben Roethlisberger restructure was also completed.  According to reports, Roethlisberger’s restructure reduced his $19.595M Cap number by $3M.  This would also remove Roethlisberger from the top 5 2013 Cap numbers and will further reduce the Exclusive Tag tender amount by $497K, making a new Exclusive Tag amount of $19.086M.

There have been reports of restructures for Lions QB Matthew Stafford (highest), Denver QB Peyton Manning (3rd highest) and Saints QB Drew Brees (4th highest) all in the works.  Each one of those would end up further reducing the Exclusive Tag number.

However, for those restructures to matter, according to Article 10, Section 2(g) of the CBA, they must be completed before the Ravens use the Franchise Tag on Joe Flacco, which is likely to occur just before next Monday’s deadline.

I think that you’re wrong on that last part. When the tag is applied, it counts against the cap the same as a non-exclusive would. Right before the draft, the top 5 salaries are determined, and the difference is applied, if a deal has not been reached of course.

If a deal is not reached by Monday afternoon, I don’t see how the Ravens would gamble and place anything else but the exclusive tag. This is no time to go cheap.
