C. J. Mosley was a Ray Lewis fan growing up. Now Mosley will be following in Lewis’ footsteps as an inside linebacker with the Ravens.

As a two-time team captain at Alabama, and a Dick Butkus Award winner, Mosley was a leader and a winner in college. Those are qualities that attracted the Ravens to Mosley, who will be expected to compete for a starting job after being selected with the 17th pick.

“I talked to the Ravens multiple times,” Mosley said during a Thursday night conference call. “I talked to (Ravens general manager) Mr. Ozzie Newsome, and he told me if I was still there I’d have a high chance of going there. I was pretty much just waiting it out.”

Newsome was a legendary college player at Alabama and has kept close ties to the program. The more Newsome heard about Mosley, the more Newsome liked. The Ravens need a starting safety, and the two highest-rated safeties in the draft were still on the board at No. 17 – Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Calvin Pryor. However, Newsome was confident in taking Mosley.

“When he gets here, I think what he brings as a player and as a person, that each and every fan in Baltimore, his teammates, and all of us that work for the Ravens will be very proud,” Newsome said.

“You’re going to love his work ethic, you’re going to love his personality,” said Ravens coach John Harbaugh.

Mosley had several injuries during his college career, including a dislocated elbow and hip. However, the Ravens were satisfied with the medical reports they received.

“There’s no question in my mind that he’s going to be ready to play from Day 1,” Newsome said.
