Newsome: Ravens Not Rushing to Judgment on Ray Rice

INDIANAPOLIS — Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome has seen the video that shows Ray Rice dragging his fiancée out of an Atlantic City casino elevator.

“It doesn’t look good,” Newsome said Saturday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine.

But Newsome emphasized multiple times that Baltimore’s organization is waiting until all of the facts of the situation come out before making any decision regarding Rice.

Rice was arrested last weekend after an altercation with his fiancée, Janay Palmer, that ended with Rice dragging a seemingly unconscious Palmer out of an elevator. Rice and Palmer were both arrested and charged with simple assault-domestic violence.

In the police report, Rice and Palmer are both described as hitting each other with their hands, and a court summons obtained by WJZ-TV describes Rice as knocking Palmer unconscious.

Newsome hasn’t spoken to Rice since the incident, which he attributed partly to having been in Indianapolis since Monday, but he said that Rice has been in regular contact with director of player development Harry Swayne, director of security Darren Sanders and coach John Harbaugh.

“I’ve talked to Darren, I’ve talked to John, and I’ve talked to Harry. And right now, I feel very good about [Rice’s] side of the story,” Newsome said.

Reports describe Rice having thrown a punch strong enough to knock Palmer unconscious, and an apparent witness told Deadspin that Rice punched Palmer “like he punched a guy” before dragging her out of the elevator.

The entire altercation was caught on surveillance video, according to MMQB.com, but the only video that has been released is the one showing Rice pulling Palmer from the elevator.

    I think Ozzie should second guess Rice. Couple this ith Rice’s spitting incident this year and his confrontations all season and it adds up to someone losing control. Rice is not the nice guy us Raven fans hope for.
