Patriots offensive lineman impressed with Joe Flacco

The NBC Sports Network gives viewers a closer look into football games, including behind-the-scenes footage and mic’d up players, on their weekly show NFL Turning Point .
Hosted by Dan Patrick, NFL Turning Point is just one more show for Ravens junkies who can’t get enough, along with Rave TV programs like 1 Winning Drive and Game Plan. The Ravens have been featured on several episodes in the past, and they were of course featured in this week’s episode, which covered the conference title games.
If you missed it, the show will air again Thursday (today) at 7:00 PM on the NBC Sports Network.
Anyway, there were some good moments captured by the microphones on players and coaches.
Two in particular stood out for me.
The first was after Tom Brady’s infamous karate kick to Ed Reed’s groin area.
On the sidelines, Reed was shown giving one of the officials a good bit of grief after no flag was thrown on the play.
“You just let him kick me, man,” Reed said, exasperated. “Y’all just let him kick. Do what he wanna do, huh? It’s his league.”
Reed then turned and got extremely animated with the official, yelling that “[Brady] looked right at me and threw his foot up man! Come on, man!”
Following the half, Brady was shown apologizing to Reed. As Reed stated later in the week, Brady also reached out to him via text message to further apologize, and the two have since talked and cleared the air.
Still, Ravens fans were glad to hear that Brady was subsequently fined $10,000 for the kick .
The second scene of the show that really grabbed my attention came as the cameras and microphones covered the second half of the game, when the Ravens took control for good.
On the Patriots’ bench, offensive linemen Logan Mankins and Ryan Wendell were talking.
Mankins – who has played eight seasons with the great Tom Brady – was impressed with Flacco’s toughness in the pocket.
“Dude,” Mankins said. “That guy will just throw it. He will just throw it. He’s about to get smoked and he just launches it.”
Now, we all know that players give each other props in the media, talking to reporters, or at press conferences. This wasn’t meant to be a public statement, the kind of anti-”bulletin board material,” that players spout on a weekly basis. This was one player talking directly to another player in the heat of the moment during a critical time in a critical game.
I’d say the praise was genuine.
(Look at the photo, he’s even growing a Joe machu mustache!)
Flacco outplayed Brady in the AFC Championship Game for the second straight year, but with one obvious, critical difference this time around – his Ravens are headed to the Super Bowl.
Ravens fans hope that San Francisco 49ers players are equally as impressed with Joe Flacco after 60 minutes of football on Sunday, February 3.
Again, the show will air again Thursday (today) at 7:00 PM on the NBC Sports Network.
Set your DVRs.
