Ravens Earn Four Compensatory Picks in 2014

Kruger Browns

With June 1st now passed, the Ravens will be receiving 4 Compensatory Draft picks in next May’s draft.

Under the NFL’s Comp Pick rules, if a team loses more qualifying Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) than it signs, the team will be awarded Comp Picks for the difference in those two numbers (up to a maximum of 4). In order for a free agent to count for Comp Pick purposes, though, he must be a true UFA, which means that his contract with his prior team has expired. As such, any player released by his prior team will not count – as a gain or loss – for Comp Pick purposes.

During this offseason, the Ravens have lost 4 qualifying UFAs who signed with other teams – LB Paul Kruger, LB Dannell Ellerbe, CB Cary Williams, S Ed Reed – but all of the free agents signed by the Ravens – DE Chris Canty, DE Marcus Spears, LB Elvis Dumervil, S Michael Huff, QB Caleb Hanie – were released by their prior teams and, thus, will not qualify as losses for Comp Pick purposes.

June 1st is an important date because it is essentially the deadline for UFAs to qualify for Comp Pick purposes. The only way a UFA would still qualify for the Comp Pick calculation is if he has received a June 1 tender from his prior team. June 1 tenders of this sort rarely happen and it is not believed that any were issued this year.

As such, any free agent signed by the Ravens from his point forward (former Jags LB Daryl Smith?) would not affect the Ravens’ Comp Pick prospects.

The exact round of those draft picks is a bit harder to forecast because the lines of division between rounds is still the real unknown part of the Comp Pick rules. Based on last year’s numbers, it would appear that the best the Ravens could hope for (assuming none of the 4 miss significant time due to injuries) would be a 3rd, 2 4ths and a 5th round Comp Picks and the worst they could get (again, assuming no injuries) would be 2 4ths, a 5th and a 6th.

So, at this point, the Ravens will head into the 2014 NFL Draft with 10 or 11 draft picks – depending on whether C AQ Shipley makes the team in September (which would cause a 7th round pick to be traded to the Indianapolis Colts).

That’s good stuff Brian. If they can make some trades during next year draft, they can pick up extra picks also. I’m hoping the Ravens can have between 11-13 picks during next years draft. That’s how you sustain winning by getting alot of picks, say 10-11 and hoping 3-5 of them pan out. Way to go Eric and Ozzie.

Once again Brian is ahead of the curve in reporting this important information. Important because they are four picks Ozzie is not allowed to trade.

Awesome article and love the forecast. Also happy to hear the Dolts will only get a 7th rounder for Shipley.

Great article, I was wondering the what the best case worst case scenario with these picks was going to be. Who are the big FA’s next year that could see big money elsewhere?
