Ravens’ McClain Hosts “53 Families”

Adversity: a difficult situation or condition : misfortune or tragedy.

There may not be a better word to describe the childhood years of Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain.

From a very young age McClain and his family battled adversity each and every day. Hard times fell on the McClain family including periods of homelessness in which he, his mother and three siblings lived at a Salvation Army rescue center in Philadelphia, PA.

To this day McClain has maintained his strong relationship with the Salvation Army and together last night they held his fourth Annual “53 Families” event.

“This is an important event for me. ’53 Families’ is one of the things that we originally started and is a great cause.” McClain stated about his special event. “It is a great opportunity to give back to this beautiful city and to the people who are less fortunate then myself.”

The 53 pre-selected families were treated to an evening of food, fun and smiles and were presented with a basket complete with a turkey and all the trimmings.

Several teammates including Morgan Cox, Matt Elam, James Ihedigbo, D.J. Bryant, Gerrard Sheppard and Kapron Lewis-Moore joined Jameel in assisting with the serving of the holiday feast.

“You’d just have nights where food was a figment of your stomach’s imagination, where you would go to bed hungry,” McClain told me in an interview some time ago.

Through the donations of several businesses along with the Salvation Army, McClain made sure for at least one night, these families had a warm dinner and food for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Great job Jameel!  Both you and “Team McClain” once again are making a difference.
