Ravens Sign S Stewart

Stewart Spags

The Baltimore Ravens have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with S Darian Stewart, general manager/executive vice president Ozzie Newsome announced Friday. Stewart is scheduled to be in Baltimore on Sunday to take a physical.

Stewart, who has played his entire four-year NFL career with the St. Louis Rams, has appeared in 53 career games (19 starts). The 5-11, 214-pounder has recorded 141 tackles (94 solo), four sacks (-31 yards), one interception (returned 27 yards for a touchdown), 15 passed defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery over the past four seasons.

Stewart originally signed with the Rams as a rookie free agent out of South Carolina in 2010. His best season came during the 2011 campaign under the guidance of then-St. Louis head coach Steve Spagnuolo, who is currently the Ravens’ assistant head coach/secondary coach. That year, Stewart posted 91 tackles (55 solo), three sacks (-23 yards) and one interception in 15 games (13 starts). In 2013, he saw action in 13 contests (six starts), compiling 36 tackles (30 solo), four passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Poor man’s Ihedigbo. Either we’re fielding an entire ST squad of marginal NFL safeties (Trawick, Miles, Levine, Omar Brown, now Stewart) or he’s backing up Elam. He’s only played SS as far as I can tell. Still not our centerfielder.

  2. Bajan Raven on said:

This is a safe signing, dependable, but not flamboyant in the way he plays but young enough to extend if he plays well next season, good job Ozzie.

  3. Douglas Mo on said:

This is nonsense!!! I know you can get Chris Clemmons on a 2 year contract and worry about RT and WR in the Draft.

  4. Jason on said:

Not understanding what Ozzie’s doing at free safety whatsoever. You have Chris Clemons and Thomas Decoud both just sitting around and I’m sure they could be had for pretty cheap, yet we’re gambling once again with these bargain basement thrift store nobodies. That’s our biggest defensive need but they haven’t even been considered as far as I can see. I just don’t get it, I hope this doesn’t come back to bite us.

    Stewart is backing up Elam.

Thomas DeCoud would be a good bet to join the ravens if they cant get the value for a FS in the Draft. I was excited to be having Michael Huff last year but that signing didnt turn out the way i wanted it to.
