Ravens to Unveil Ray Lewis Statue During 2014 Season

Johnny Unitas will have some company at M&T Bank Stadium this fall.

During an interview with the Baltimore Sun, Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti announced the team will unveil a statue outside of the stadium in Unitas Plaza of legendary Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis.

The Sun reported also included that Lewis has been a part of the process along the way and the statue will be constructed by sculptor Fred Kail, who did the famous Unitas statue as well.

“He’s well into it,” Bisciotti said at the NFL owners meetings on Monday. “I haven’t seen any progress pictures, but the original stuff was just off the charts. We think we’ll have it done before the season starts.”

Honoring Ray has long been the plan by the Ravens organization since Ray retired after spending 17 seasons in the purple and black.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we do it next year.” Stated Ravens Senior Vice President of Community and Public Relations Kevin Byrne in an article on the teams’ website in September.

Bisciotti didn’t give any hints as to what the statue would look like but one is only hoping it will be the final move of Ray’s infamous “Squirrel Dance”.

Some critics will boast that it’s too soon for such a statue, while others will argue Lewis is our generation’s Johnny Unitas and the statue is well-deserved and timely.

Count me among the latter.

Never before have the Ravens honored a player to this magnitude and when you think of the Ravens, thoughts of Ray Lewis quickly follow.

It's traditional for fans to rub the boot of the John Unitas statue. What should fans do to honor Ray?
Bark when passing the statue (16%)
Gesture 52 with your hands (9%)
Do the squirrel dance (28%)
Touch his shoe with 2 fingers symbolizing 2 World Championships (47%)
This poll has completed. Thank you for voting.

8 Raves on “Ravens to Unveil Ray Lewis Statue During 2014 Season

Well deserved honor. Not too early.I do have to wonder what is going through Jon Ogden’s mind though that he didn’t get one yet and it’s been 6 years. No not everyone can have one but man, he was to OL men what Ray was to LB s .The way I see it one of the top 5 best lineman to ever play the game deserves a trophy as much as one of the top 5 best LB’s to ever play the game deserves one.Hell maybe even one of the best 5 safeties to ever to play the game in Ed Reed as well could be made a case for a statue .

And yes I am aware that we put up their names in the stadium like Boulware, J Lewis and Stover but with Ray, Jon and Ed you are really in the truest meaning talking about top 5 at their position in the history of the game that is why i only mentioned those 3 though I can see where you may run out of room if you did too many but the Orioles did it with what 5 members at camden yards.

He is right there as far as I think and most people think he and Anthony Munoz. No question top 5 but maybe one can make the case as the best ever.Who would pick over him. Also, some would make the case that Ray’s not the best either with L Taylor, D.Butkus.In Raven land we like to think Ray is the best but nation wide you only hear of Ray being one of the best not the best.

Cheri, I know what you are saying but I also want to say that it makes my blood boil when i hear people compare LT and Ray. The fact that LT was coked up all the time which he admitted in his own book, disqualifies him flat out. Hell, Ray would have killed people if he had been coked up like LT.
