Ed Reed’s fine exposes more Goodell inconsistencies

goodellpuppet
Ed Reed has once again been fined by the NFL “suits” who cozy up in the league offices. And, once again, it’s an absolute crock. When Reed files his taxes for 2012, he’ll see plenty of additional write-offs to his taxable income for “charitable contributions,” because according to Jay Glazer of Fox Sports, Reed has been fined $55,000 for his “helmet-to-helmet” hit on Giants’ wide receiver Victor Cruz. In case you weren’t aware, all NFL fine money goes to various charities, thus allowing players to deduct it from their taxable...

Flags continue to be a thorn in Ravens’ side

refthrowflag
As the Ravens prepare for what will essentially be a glorified preseason game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, they must utilize this time to get healthy and fine tune their team. One major area of concern: penalties. Heading into the final game of the regular season, the Ravens have been the flagged fifth-most times (120) in the NFL, but have given away the most yardage to penalties (1025). After practice on Wednesday, I caught up with right tackle Kelechi Osemele to ask if there is anything the team can work...

One on One: Kelechi Osemele

osemele
In a 2012 draft class that is shaping up to be average at best for the Ravens, rookie right tackle Kelechi Osemele has been a bright spot. From Week 1, Osemele has entrenched himself along the starting offensive line at right tackle, even though he told Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun he’d prefer to play guard. Osemele has been a model rookie, doing what the coaches ask and even though his offensive line has been under some criticism, he’s tuned out the negativity and remained extremely positive. Common football fans...

KIDZ KORNER: Caldwell’s influence was on full display against New York

caldwell
During the 33-14 dismantling of the Giants, significant players made major strides. Joe Flacco led the bunch, throwing for over 300 yards and playing virtually perfect. He must have read my last article. While #5 did play great, he has to keep it up throughout the playoffs if he wants to earn respect. Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce had efficient games as well, both going over 100 yards. Many were surprised to see such a breakout game for the offense, but there was one guy who wasn’t – Jim Caldwell....

Tucker on his first NFL season: “I’m having a blast”

justintucker
Elevated blood pressure comes with the territory of being a passionate football fan. Fans invest much of their time, energy, and hard earned money to watch men play a game – one that will largely dictate their attitude and behavior in the following days. For Ravens fans, it seems all too fitting that a young man who has seized one of the most stressful situations that their team faces just so happens to be the son of a cardiologist. Justin Tucker came into training camp as a 22-year old recent...

Yanda faces tough task in Bengals’ Atkins

yanda
Marshal Yanda’s play at right guard had been the bright spot on an inconsistent Ravens offensive line. Yanda is playing under a five-year, $32 million contract extension that he signed days after the lockout ended, and his value was never more evident than two weeks ago against the Denver Broncos. Snapping a streak of 44-consecutive starts, Yanda was sidelined with an injured right ankle. Despite the stat sheet showing only three sacks allowed, quarterback Joe Flacco spent most of the game running for his life. Even though he plays alongside...

FILMSTUDY: Defensive notes vs. Giants 12/23/12

ellerbeeli
During the Denver broadcast, Gumbel quoted Harbaugh as saying the Ravens needed “more yards, more first downs, and more snaps.” The Ravens were outsnapped for the 9th time in 10 games versus Denver.  However, they reversed that trend against the Giants, outsnapping New York by a whopping 81-45 margin en route to a 33-14 win. The Ravens would knock down Eli Manning 9 times including 3 sacks in 31 drop backs, and allowed just 3.8 YPP.  Manning had been sacked an NFL-low 16 times entering the game. The Ravens are now...

RAVENS REPORT CARD: Ravens 33 Giants 14

ricetdgiants
The reigning world-champion New York football Giants came to Baltimore with their playoff lives at stake. Question was, which Giants team would the Baltimore Ravens see? The Giants who were shutout 34-0 in Atlanta a week prior?  Or the Giants who had crushed a good Packers team and a surging Saints squad in home contests in weeks 12 and 14? It wasn’t an easy game to predict. After all, the Ravens were reeling, losers of three straight and playing just as poorly at home as on the road. They came...

CRAB BAG: Should be a Super Bowl XLVI rematch

elifrown
If Lee Evans could catch, today’s game between the Ravens and Giants would be not only a Super Bowl XXXV rematch, but a Super Bowl XLVI rematch. Unfortunately, as it stands, today’s contest is merely a game between the defending champions, who are moving in the wrong direction as the postseason approaches, and our purple and black, who are unfortunately doing the same. Both squads are desperate for a victory today. Though the Ravens have locked up a playoff spot, the AFC North is still up for grabs, while the...

Reeling Ravens in desperate need of a win

Denver Broncos v Baltimore Ravens
Less a month ago, the Baltimore Ravens were the 2nd seed in the AFC, and looked to be a large threat to the rest of the league. Now, the Ravens have dropped to the 4th seed and are seen by many as the worst playoff team this year. The Ravens are in deep trouble. The offense is imploding and the defense can’t stop a nosebleed. They haven’t just lost games, but they’ve been completely manhandled and quite frankly, embarrassed. The defense has been torn apart by a 38-year old backup, two rookies,...

Caldwell should simplify offense

flaccopierce
The Ravens offense needs a dose of common sense. Too many times this year, there have been issues among the fans with the way the offense is run. Cam Cameron was to blame for many of those situations rather than Joe Flacco because fans would hope the problems with their franchise quarterback are minimal. Well now the OC is fired. But yet on Sunday against the Denver Broncos, the offense still had the same issues. So when does common sense play a role? What I mean by that is the...

Battle Plans: Giants vs. Ravens

Giants Ravens Football
Offense   1. Fast-Track the Running Game      Against a struggling Giants defense, the Ravens offense has to find a way to open it up. However, that doesn’t mean that they have to pass the ball out of these more open sets and formations. Using Ray Rice out of single back sets and getting him involved in the draw/delay game is a way to puncture the New York rush and keep the offense humming at a fast pace. It might help Rice as well to see a less condensed...

Chris McAlister gives his opinions on Cary Williams

Baltimore Ravens v New Orleans Saints
Prior to the start of the season, the Ravens secondary was looked at as one of the best units in the league. Cornerback Lardarius Webb earned himself a $50 million extension, Jimmy Smith was healthy after an injury-plagued rookie campaign and Cary Williams was confident enough in his abilities that he turned down a contract extension offer reportedly worth $15 million. Webb, Smith and Williams are all trying to accomplish in Baltimore what Chris McAlister was able to do during his ten seasons in Baltimore – win a Super Bowl...

Six Ravens win fan vote for 2013 Pro Bowl

NFL: Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers
The NFL has announced the results of fan voting for the 2013 Pro Bowl, and six Ravens finished at the top of their respective categories. Only the Green Bay Packers had as many players that can say the same. On offense, Michael Oher and Vonta Leach led their categories, while Haloti Ngata, Ed Reed, and Bernard Pollard held down the defensive side of the ball. In addition, Jacoby Jones won the fan vote as a kick returner. Ravens fans will of course scoff at Oher (and to a lesser extent,...

Eli Manning talked to brother Peyton “a little bit” about the Ravens

peytoneli
There are only 32 starting NFL quarterback jobs in the world at any given moment. There are roughly 311 million people US residents. If 49% of them are male, that makes 152,390,000. Based on census numbers, about 10.6 percent of males are between the ages of 20-34 (NFL quarterback age, give or take). Using these numbers, we get a figure of 16,153,340. Over 16 million men in the U.S. vying for 32 “dream” jobs. And two of those jobs are held by brothers. Hardly seems fair. But that’s the case,...

Dannell Ellerbe nearing return from ankle injury

ellerbeast
The Ravens have not won a game since Dannell Ellerbe has been sidelined with an ankle injury. As a replacement for Ray Lewis following his triceps tear, Ellerbe was a bright spot in a struggling defense. As surprising as it is to say, out of all the injured players this season, Ellerbe is possibly the one the Ravens currently miss the most (though Lardarius Webb may have a thing or two to say about that). This season, Ellerbe has come into his own. After being given a second-round tender by the...

Film breakdown: Joe’s bad day – blame the offensive line

flacco9
Joe Flacco is being torn down around Baltimore. I can’t tune in to the radio, turn on my TV, or read the Newspaper without seeing Joe being lambasted. If I took the opinions found on these media as the prevailing thoughts of the majority of Ravens fans than I would be sickened. Fans that may have been “Wacco for Flacco” at some point are now calling Joe stupid, slow, apathetic, and overrated. Let’s get a few things straight: Joe Flacco isn’t going anywhere. Joe Flacco isn’t the only problem with...

KIDZ KORNER: Ravens-Giants preview

eliray
After losing the last 3 games, the Ravens will look to get back on track against a slumping New York team. The Giants, who are coming off of a 34-0 shellacking from the Falcons, come into M&T Bank Stadium eyeing to improve to 9-6. Some might dispute that the Giants have more to play for, and that could be true. They are in the midst of a three-way tie in the NFC East and a loss on Sunday could doom their chances at winning the division. The Ravens, however, have...

Jonathan Ogden discusses the current state of the Ravens offensive line

jonogden
In September, it was announced that former Ravens left tackle Jonathan Ogden – the first draft pick in franchise history – was nominated for enshrinement into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. With so many questions concerning the current Ravens offensive line, Ogden, one of the best left tackles to ever put on pads, would figure to be someone to give a fair and honest assessment. JO joined former teammate Brad Jackson and myself on the Purple and Black Attack Show at Hightopps this past Monday. “Part of the problem is...
