Terrance West Was Nearly a Raven

The Baltimore Ravens ended up getting Lorenzo Taliaferro, a big, power running back that fits what the Ravens were looking to add at the position.

But Baltimore almost had local star Terrance West.

The Baltimore native and former Towson running back told reporters in Cleveland Saturday that the Ravens were planning to select him with their second third-round pick, the 99th pick overall.

“They texted my agent and told him they were going to take me,” West said.

However, the Cleveland Browns traded up, acquired the 94th overall pick from the San Francisco 49ers and took West five picks before Baltimore was apparently ready to select him.

The Ravens ended up choosing tight end Crockett Gillmore and then drafted Taliaferro a round later.

“We like Terrance,” Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome said last week. “He was a guy that we had as a draftable player, and we’ll just be playing against him twice a year now.”

Yes the Cleveland Plain Dealer had a nice write up and interview with him.It was a good interview. He seems very pumped and excited to get his career started after all he went through getting his foot in the door with a college program. It seems like he has already put his Ravens love behind him and has moved on already which as a professional you have to do.I am sure it felt strange for Gino and AQ to go up against the Steelers the team they loved growing up in the Burg but it’s a business and it’s the team you play for now.I wish him well.

I’m sorry but this story makes absolutely no sense to me. As guarded as the Raven’s are about their board why on earth would they text an agent, 6 or 7 picks and over 30 mins before they were back on the clock, that they were gonna pick his client? How would this benefit the Ravens? I think it’s much more likely that since West had been linked to the Raven’s before the draft, and many believed the Raven’s were gonna use a mid round pick on a RB, that the agent made it up that the Ravens had texted him and then leaked this info in an effort to get his client drafted earlier.

Steve as odd as it may sound this happens quite often. You hear about these stories every year. They treat their information leading up to the draft like the CIA does theirs but once the draft get’s underway it’s not un common for teams to get in touch with their guy a few picks in advance.I even heard Bobby Beathard said “he wants to make sure the guy is still breathing or didn’t suffer some major injury within the last couple of hours” he was laughing but also sincere when he said it. I think knowing his heart was in Baltimore I don’t think Terrance was too worry about getting drafted 6 or 7 picks higher, how much more money are we talking about here it’s probably pretty min.
