THE TURK ARRIVES: Ravens Roster Pared Down to 53

The Turk

As of 12:30 PM today there are 53 players on the Ravens roster. The biggest surprises are arguably OL Antoine McClain and the fact that 5 safeties are currently on the roster including Anthony Levine and Brynden Trawick. Also the team has opted to release Bobby Rainey and go with just 2 running backs instead of their traditional three. Carrying two fullbacks (Leach & Juszczyk) may have forced the team’s hand.

Dennis Pitta is also among the 53 but that will change come Tuesday when he’ll be moved to Injured Reserve with a designation for return, like that used for Ray Lewis in 2012.

Once Pitta is properly assigned a roster spot will open. It is also unlikely that McClain will remain. Early signs point to many guards being available after all teams get to the mandated 53 and more than likely a few will be more accomplished than the undrafted former Clemson Tiger.

UPDATED AT 1:25: According to Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun Antoine McClain has been released.

It is also likely that a corner will replace Levine or Trawick, since the Ravens only have 4 healthy corners at the moment.

This makes sense why Ferstenburg and Bajima were cut. If they can make it through waivers then we can sign either one once Pitta decision is made. I doubt Rainey will make it through waivers

  2. RavenRich on said:

I am sure there will be several comments, angered at the decisions to cut Rainey and Furstenburg, more than any other. Those should not be surprises though. They are not quite good enough to make this roster. Bajema may be back after redesignating Pitta and Furst could be a practice squad guy. Rainey may also end up back on the practice squad as I am not certain that he will be signed in the next day. I am a little surprised Omar was beaten by both Brendan and Anthony at safety. Did not see that coming.
