THE WATER COOLER: The Disappearance of Tyrod

Now that the Ravens have parted ways with Marcus Spears and Michael Huff the pro-Boldin camp has stepped up in full force in protest of the trade that sent Anquan packing for the San Francisco Bay Area.

Defenders of the move have almost always pointed out that Ozzie Newsome adeptly used the $6M in cap savings to improve the defense. Critics will say that the bonus money given to underachievers Spears ($600K), Huff ($1.5M) and Chris Canty ($2M) could have been used to structure a new deal for Boldin.

To those critics I’d remind them of Daryl Smith and Elvis Dumervil and the fact that over the last four games Tandon Doss has slightly outperformed Boldin.

And let’s be honest, with San Francisco’s offensive line and No. 1 ranked running game, Boldin should be more productive. Imagine what those numbers would look like in Baltimore? Maybe worse than Doss’?

Given the way the Ravens offense has struggled you would think that Jim Caldwell and his offensive staff would figure out a way to get one of their most dynamic players on the field – Tyrod Taylor.

Taylor is a playmaker who is dangerous in open space and he can force defenses onto their heels and to take pause. Whenever you force a defense to play outside of their comfort zone they slow down and when they do, windows of opportunity open up.

Rolando McClain has made his way back into the news and this time for good reasons. McClain has stepped away from the game, probably just temporarily, for all good reasons. He simply wants to be a better man.

If successful that could make him a better football player and a better teammate. The Ravens were wise to place him on the reserve/retired list where they still control his NFL rights. Could a dynamic pair of inside linebackers (Rolando McClain, Arthur Brown) be part of the Ravens’ foreseeable future?

BROWNS NOTES: The Ravens will likely bracket Josh Gordon and try to prevent the big play. The speedy receiver is averaging 44.1 yards on his 8 scores, seven of which have gone for 30 yards or more…Head Coach Rob Chudzinski thinks his team is different than the one that lost to the Ravens on September 15. “We’re a lot better team right now.”

Are the Ravens better?

They will have to be.

Sunday will tell us a lot about the future of the 2013 season.
