CAMP NOTES DAY 6

Camp Notes CAMP NOTES DAY 6

Practice this morning was held at Bair Stadium due to the rains last night creating somewhat soggy conditions on the upper fields adjacent to the McDaniel College gymnasium.  Today the offense wore purple while the defense reclaimed the more traditional white.  Indications are that the sides will flip flop each week during camp.

Ben Grubbs and Antwan Barnes returned from injuries and participated in individual drills.  Grubbs’ return was a bit more intense than Barnes who was seen off on his own jogging and warming up the sore right ankle.  Barnes said he’s close to returning to team workouts.

Clarence Moore was also at practice working on the sore hamstring nearby his unit.  Justin Green returned to action and participated in special teams drills.  Mike Kracalik also returned to action while working his way back in slowly.  Dan Cody and Jonathan Ogden remain out. Kelly Gregg was also out today.

During red zone drills, the Ravens got a bit of a scare when Justin Bannan nearly rolled up on Steve McNair’s leg.  McNair took a few more snaps after the accidental mishap and showed no sign of any problems.  McNair took significantly less reps than Kyle Boller and was for the most part a spectator during the last 30 minutes of practice.  Rick Neuheisel said that McNair’s hip was a little sore and he was held out for precautionary reasons.

And why not, given the sloppy overall play of the offense today?  Practice looked more like it did in past summer camps with the defense dominating.  Haloti Ngata stood out.  He threw Chris Chester around like a rag doll in isolated linemen drills and he burst through the line late in practice, hitting Mike Anderson 3 yards in the backfield sending him parallel to the turf.  Chris McAlister, excited by the effort shouted, “We ain’t even live!  Look at that!”

For the most part, the practice was a bit flat and uneventful.  Brian Billick mentioned after practice that the lack of intensity is no surprise given that the team just concluded it’s first week of practice and the first preseason game is a week away.  The players may be guilty of peeking ahead.  Billick added that there’s a lot to work on over the next couple of days before they begin to install the game plan for Philadelphia on Friday, just after the player’s off day on Thursday.

Other observations…The team also ran through some rather uneventful 7 on 7 drills.  Troy Smith was inconsistent.  He hit TE Marcus Freeman for a score threading the needle between two defenders and then he was later picked off by Dennis Haley.  During 7 on 7’s, the offensive and defensive linemen competed at the far end of the field.  Haloti Ngata dominated Chris Chester…Chester also had a difficult time today with DT Anthony Bryant…Jason Brown handled Atiyyah Ellison while Jared Gaither once again handled Terrell Suggs.  Gaither later lost a battle with Edgar Jones…Jones also took on and defeated Adam Terry…Justin Bannan got the best of Mike Flynn while Terrell Suggs took out his Gaither frustrations on Marshall Yanda and beat with a strong move to the inside…This afternoon’s practice is set for 4:00.

Note: There are some conflicting reports over who rolled up on McNair’s leg in practice on Monday.  Some claim it to be Haloti Ngata while others say Justin Bannan. I’ll confirm that on Tuesday.
