Ravens WR Derrick Mason announced today that his charitable arm, the Derrick Mason Foundation, will be making a $25,000 gift to Rebuilding Together Baltimore in 2008. Rebuilding Together, the nation’s leading organization bringing volunteers and communities together to improve the homes and lives of low-income homeowners, provides free repair services for those with the greatest need.
Rebuilding Together Baltimore repairs homes and revitalizes communities in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. By mobilizing a volunteer workforce, Rebuilding Together ensures that low-income homeowners, especially those who are elderly, disabled and families with children, live in greater independence in warmer, safer and drier homes.
The nonprofit will utilize Mason’s gift during their Rebuilding Day on April 26, 2008 in Turner Station. The donation will fund the repair of five – seven homes out of the 25 that will be renovated. Just south of Dundalk, Turner Station was originally deemed a ship builder’s neighborhood and is the oldest African-American community in Baltimore County. Mason will join more than 100 volunteers on April 26 for a day of hands-on activity, renovating and restoring historic homes.
“Teaming with Rebuilding Together Baltimore gives me an opportunity to help those who are in need,†Mason said. “It’s not about giving a check, but actually being out there getting my hands dirty with so many volunteers. I’m blessed to be able to donate funds, but I’m really looking forward to striking a hammer and hauling mulch.â€
Since 1989, Rebuilding Together has repaired close to 1,000 homes in Baltimore City and Baltimore County, mobilizing more than 19,000 volunteers to assist 30 neighborhoods.
The Derrick Mason Foundation was established to provide at-risk children and families in both the Nashville and Baltimore areas with opportunities to pursue their dreams. The foundation provides and supports interactive programs and events that directly benefit children who face serious challenges in their lives, such as mental and/or physical challenges or the environment in which they live. Annually, Mason hosts the Holiday Helpers event in December, and provides gift certificates and a unique shopping experience for Baltimore youth in need.
