OWINGS MILLS — In the wake of Baltimore Ravens cornerback Derrick Martin being charged with drug abuse after police officers alleged he was holding three small packets of suspected marijuana Saturday at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the football team released a statement Tuesday afternoon.

Martin, 23, initially told the team that he wasn’t formally cited following a random TSA screening at a security checkpoint for a departing flight. However, Martin has been charged and is being mailed a citation.

The third-year defensive back has been assigned a July 15 court appearance with the option of either paying a $100 fine in advance of the court date or he could attempt to fight the drug charge at Cleveland Municipal Court.

"We are aware of the situation with Derrick, and we have talked with him about this," the Ravens said in the statement. "There is a due process taking place, and we are following that."

Martin’s agent, Brad Cicala, said that Martin is considering his legal options and isn’t planning to make a statement at this time.

The former sixth-round draft pick was in Cleveland for a football camp.

Aaron Wilson covers the Baltimore Ravens for the Carroll County Times and the Annapolis Capital.
