Some people will tell you that Dave Trembley stresses fundamentals with his team yet the mental errors and the base running blunders continue. Sure, some of that is on his players – perhaps most of it. But eventually, the finger will point Trembley’s way when they show him the door.
By the time you are a major leaguer, shouldn’t you already know fundamental baseball? Shouldn’t you know where to go with the ball when runners are on base; know when to run, when to look to your coaches; know how many outs there are?
Mr. Mojo isn’t privy to what happens in the Orioles’ locker room but he is familiar with parenting. If you talk to your kids about manners and they continue to behave poorly, they do so because there are no repercussions. So, how do you change it? You crack the whip a bit, in a figurative sense.
So, with that in mind, isn’t it about time for Trembley to throw the bats and the balls into the shower with his “children?” He probably won’t because he like many of his players he is on low wattage cruise control counting down the days until October 4 when they host the Blue Jays in the season finale.
Gee, wonder how many will be at The Yard that afternoon while the Ravens are on the tube against the Patriots?
Staying with the O’s for a second, can you name a bigger pair of homers than Tom Davis and Jim Hunter…and I’m not talking about the kind that are the landing spot for so many of Jeremy Guthrie’s pitches?
Ok so that took more than a second…
Brett Favre had his preseason debut for the Vikings against the mighty Kansas City Chiefs and he looked like a deer in headlights. If he was a rookie that’s exactly what the ESPN analysts would have called him. Instead analyst Tim Hasselbeck lauded Favre for his performance excusing him for missing so much of camp. WTF?
After the game amongst other things, Favre pointed to his lack of practice as an issue.
"I didn’t want to get off on the wrong foot. I wanted to call the plays right, get in and out of the huddle, be as smooth as possible. Based on the fact there were 2 1/2 days [of practice] I consider that a small victory tonight."
Hey, remember how everyone always wondered how Matt Millen kept his job in Detroit? Many assumed he had some compromising pictures of the Ford family ensuring his position as the Lion’s General Manager, Executive VP and whatever other title he desired? Mr. M.R. is thinking the same about Anita Marks. What does she have on you over there at CBS Radio?
Speaking of CBS Radio, isn’t it annoying that they are forced to air commercials about Ravens-related events yet they can’t say the word “Ravens?” They have to say something silly like the purple and black, or Baltimore football team. What’s next, “Welcome to The middle linebacker who wears No. 52 Show?”
Anyone catch any of Hard Knocks on HBO? Is it me or is it pretty clear why Cincinnati Bengals’ organization regularly fails? Starting with team President Mike Brown right on through to the water boy, the Ravens are superior. How insulting that Mike Brown sits in front of the coaching staff and dictates the composition of the team’s roster? How embarrassing for Marvin Lewis that given his dangling by a string coaching status that he has to sit there and take it? And Baltimore, be thankful for the coaching staff that the Ravens have assembled.
Comparing the Bengals’ staff to the Ravens is like comparing an assistant coach at Boys Latin to Vince Lombardi.
