Think back to March 2004, when the Ravens announced that they reached a trade agreement with the San Francisco 49ers that would bring Pro Bowl wide receiver, Terrell Owens to Baltimore. Ravens fans were so excited and began discussing how dominant their team was going to be now that they had one of the best receivers in the league. But as we know, the trade never went through.
Somehow the Philadelphia Eagles ended up prying Owens away from San Francisco and completely killing the trade and Baltimore’s happiness. After this situation went down, there was a lot of tension between the city of Baltimore and Terrell Owens. From a fan standpoint, I can see why everyone was disgusted and upset about Owens’ decision, but put your feet in Terrell’s cleats. Would you rather go to a team with KYLE BOLLER as your quarterback or Donovan McNabb, who led the Eagles to the conference championship three years in a row?
Similar to LeBron James when he took his talents to South Beach; Owens chose to go to a team that was familiar with success. Seven years later, Owens is currently sitting on his couch wondering why he hasn’t received any offers from any NFL teams and you know what, so am I
A season ago, Owens was the leading receiver on the Cincinnati Bengals making Chad Ochocinco look like a back-up. It’s been shown that he has ditched the cockiness and the attitude towards his QBs after playing with Buffalo in 2009. Later he landed in Cincy where he lead the Bengals in receptions (72), receiving yards (983) and touchdowns (9) including a 78 yarder. Due to his knee surgery and his old age, teams aren’t really interested in his talents anymore.
Maybe the Ravens should be.
With the injury of Anquan Boldin and the lack of production from Lee Evans, the Ravens could use a player like Owens to help carry the load during the playoffs. Torrey Smith has definitely shown that he’s a threat, but he won’t be able to do it alone. I can already predict that Flacco will be targeting Dickson, Pitta and Smith the most during Sunday’s game against the Bengals. Owens wouldn’t be able to play during week 17, but he could still be just as useful during the playoffs.
If the Ravens could pull off this win against Cincy; not only would they get a first round bye, but that will also help Boldin heal from his knee surgery and give Owens a chance to learn the system. At the age of 38, Owens still remains physical. Although he isn’t playing on a team, he always makes sure that he’s in physical shape. Basically, if the NY Jets can take a chance with Plaxico Burress; a man who hadn’t played football in nearly two years and is currently tied for the most TDs on the team with 8, then why shouldn’t the Ravens take a chance with Terrell Owens?
Just think about it. Boldin, Smith, Owens and Evans all targets for Joe Flacco to throw to complemented by the youngsters Dickson, Pitta and Smith. With a receiving corps like that, how could the Ravens not dominate their way to the Super Bowl?
Make the call Ozzie!
