Nearly two months after leaving Baltimore to become the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, former defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano’s influence is still impacting the Ravens.
Three of the five free agents to leave Baltimore for
“greener” pastures have had ties to the Pagano brothers.
Earlier this morning, Haruki Nakamura signed a three-year
deal with the Carolina Panthers, which had most Ravens fans feeling that Ozzie
Newsome would turn his attention to resigning their other backup safety, Tom
That wasn’t the case.
The Ravens have lost their second free agent safety today as
Zbikowski has decided to join the Indianapolis Colts on a three-year deal.
Even though the team is currently extremely depleted in the
safety position, the Ravens will address younger and cheaper talent via the
draft and free agency. Both Nakamura and Zibikowski were good players but are
also easily replaceable.
The one thing to watch with Zbikowski’s departure to
Indianapolis is how much it may influence the departure of free agent
linebacker, Brendon Ayanbadejo. As any Ravens fan on Twitter knows, Ayanbadejo
and Zbikowski were very good friends and neighbors during their time in
Baltimore. Frequently, pictures would be posted from Ayanbadejo’s Instagram
account of them driving in Zbikowski’s car either from practice or BWI airport
during the season.
Even though the Ravens have experienced a lot more
subtraction than addition this free agency period, it should change shortly.
Just like the draft, the Ravens have a plan and it’s one that has made them the
most consistent playoff team in the past four seasons.
In Ozzie we trust!
