It’s time for the Ravens ‘teams’ to be special

For a team featuring a roster as athletic as the Baltimore Ravens, their special teams were anything but special. The truth be told they were rather abysmal.

And therein lays some irony.

What was John Harbaugh known for coming from the Eagles?

If you answered special teams you would be correct.

The team’s lackluster performance on teams is reminiscent of offensive guru Brian Billick’s failures to produce even an above average offense in Baltimore.

In 2011 the Ravens were one rung above the status of bottom feeders in average yards given up on kickoff returns (29.2 yard average). The New York Jets’ Joe McKnight returned a kick 107 yards for a TD on Sunday Night Football at M&T Bank Stadium in October, 2011 – the longest return against the Ravens in franchise history.

The Ravens finished 24th in punt return average allowed, an 11.9 average inflated somewhat by giving up two punt returns for touchdowns, one an 82 yard return by the Arizona Cardinals rookie Patrick Peterson.

Yesterday, the Ravens made a few moves to redirect the productivity (or lack thereof) of Coach Jerry Rosburg’s unit. Returning special teams Pro Bowler Brendon Ayanbadejo, newcomer Pro Bowler Corey Graham and journeyman Sean Considine are all being counted upon to reverse this trend.

The investment has been made.

We’ll see if Rosburg can rally his unit and get the young aspiring defensive starters to buy in.

Otherwise a change at special teams coordinator must be made.
