Joe Flacco and the Ravens will eventually settle on a deal. The guess here is that it will happen sometime between June and the start of training camp.

Let’s consider the dynamics of this for a moment…

Flacco is represented by one of the good guys in the world of player agents – Joe Linta. Linta for the most part has represented the NFL’s grunts, the guys who do the dirty work. His roster of clients is hardly a “Who’s Who” of skill position players.

Clearly Linta would like to change that because the payday for players who touch the quarterback or who touch the ball is generally higher than the W-2 that the Matt Birks of the world take home.

Suffice it to say, Linta wants to methodically pour throw the machinations and due diligence on a new contract for his quarterback client who is arguably among the game’s best 10 signal callers. It makes sense for him going forward and attracting new skill position clients.

These things take time.

But for Flacco’s sake, let’s hope it doesn’t take too long.

Lately he’s been showing cracks in his skin. Things bantered about by fans and the media seem to be striking a nerve with the up-to-now unflappable Flacco. And you have to wonder how he might respond if he does begin the 2012 season without a contract extension.

Will it affect his play?

Could a personal agenda supersede the team’s agenda?

Can Flacco handle that kind of pressure?

What if a deal isn’t done and the Ravens then franchise Flacco in 2013? What happens to Ray Rice if he still isn’t under contract for an extended period? Not signing Flacco in 2012 will expose Rice AND it gives Rice and his agent Todd France some leverage. Keep in mind teams have only one franchise tag.

It behooves both sides to get a deal done over the next few months.

Failing to do so doesn’t bode well for Flacco or the Ravens.

This quarterback might not have the mettle to perform in a contract year and if the guys at the bargaining table let this deal get away from them, both sides are likely to lose.
