OWINGS MILLS — Baltimore Ravens offensive guard Jah Reid was carted off the field with a strained calf during the final practice of a mandatory minicamp.

Reid’s right leg was extended on the cart as he was driven off the field to the training room Thursday afternoon.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh was in no mood to discuss Reid’s condition after practice.

“Why are you even asking me,” Harbaugh said tersely. “Why? They are fine, everybody is fine.”

Reid is a former third-round draft pick from Central Florida who lined up with the first-team offense at right tackle with Michael Oher shifting over to left tackle this week. Starting left tackle Bryant McKinnie was held out of practice due to ongoing conditioning problems.

The 6-foot-7, 330-pound Reid was initially slated to compete for the starting left guard job with rookie second-round pick Kelechi Osemele, who’s sidelined with a quadriceps injury.

However, the frontrunner at left guard now is former Cincinnati Bengals starting offensive guard Bobbie Williams.

The 6-foot-4, 345-pounder has been running with the first-team offense and appears primed to fill a vacancy created when Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs signed a $36 million contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Meanwhile, the following players weren’t at practice: free safety Ed Reed (unexcused), center Matt Birk (varicose vein surgery), running back Ray Rice (unsigned franchise player) and McKinnie.

Several players didn’t practice due to injuries, including wide receiver Tandon Doss (leg), rookie running back Bernard Pierce (hamstring) wide receiver David Reed (knee), outside linebacker Terrell Suggs (Achilles tendon), offensive lineman Howard Barbieri (undisclosed), rookie offensive guard Kelechi Osemele (quadriceps) and wide receiver Jacoby Jones (right ankle).

Cornerback Cary Williams was limited after undergoing offseason hip surgery.

Jones wasn’t limping and seemed to be in good spirits watching practice , joking with middle linebacker Ray Lewis.

“He’s going to be OK,” Harbaugh said of Jones. “We’ll see.”

The Ravens retained McKinnie in March by picking up his $500,000 roster bonus based on him making a personal commitment to general manager Ozzie Newsome that he would get in shape. McKinnie was cut by the Minnesota Vikings last summer after ballooning up to 387 pounds.

Harbaugh declined to say what McKinnie needed to do to get back on the field by training camp in late July.

Earlier this spring, McKinnie said he was down to 358 pounds with a target weight of 345 pounds. It’s unclear if he’s had some sort of setback with his conditioning or diet.

“We will leave that between us,” Harbaugh said. “That’s something that’s an in-house type of thing right now. Bryant has done a good job, he’s worked hard. It’s not as simple as some of you guy want to make it.

“It’s just a situation where we are going to do what’s best for the team, what’s best for Bryant. We want him here. There’s no reason he shouldn’t be here. He has worked hard, so you try to do what’s most beneficial for every guy in every situation. And it’s always individualized.”

Harbaugh praised Oher when asked how he’s faring at his old left tackle spot.

“He looks really good,” Harbaugh said. “Did you watch practice? Put your spin on it. I’m sure you will.

"You’re an evaluator. Mike looks great. Mike always looks great. Mike practices his tail off. He does a great job.”

BABY FLACCO: Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has joined the ranks of fatherhood.

Flacco’s wife, Dana, gave birth today to an eight-pound boy named Stephen Flacco.

Flacco’s father is named Stephen Flacco. The middle name is Vincent, which is also Joe Flacco’s middle name.

This is the couple’s first child. They got married last year.

Harbaugh said he exchanged text messages with Flacco to congratulate him.

SALARY CAP UPDATE: The Ravens’ tight salary-cap situation became even more constricted after signing Williams to a two-year, $2.925 million contract that includes an $800,000 signing bonus.

They are now $531,858 under the NFL salary-cap limit of $120.6 million, including a $1.325 million cap figure for this year.

New center Tony Wragge signed a one-year deal worth $825,000, including a $25,000 roster bonus.

Under the minimum salary benefit, his contract only counts for $565,000 against the salary cap.

QUICK HITS: Inside linebacker Dannell Ellerbe returned to the practice field after getting his right leg wrapped and intercepted a pass. .. Rookie free agent linebacker Nigel Carr intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. … Rookie wide receiver Deonte Thompson continues to flash his speed, but looked tentative going over the middle when he dropped a pass even though these are non-contact practices. … Owner Steve Bisciotti’s golf cart must have good shocks. Bisciotti hauled defensive linemen Terrence Cody, Bryan Hall and Arthur Jones and outside linebacker Paul Kruger off the field in his cart, a combined weight of roughly 1,170 pounds. … Harbaugh seemed pleased overall with how the team performed during the three days. "I’m really happy, it was a really good minicamp," Harbaugh said. "I love the way we worked. I love the mindset of our guys, the very determined mindset. They are having fun, working hard and that’s what you ask for, spirited."
