Last 3 Super Bowl winners beat Eagles in their home opener

Opposing the Eagles in their season opener at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia has become quite the harbinger of future success.

In fact, the past three teams to square off against the Eagles in their first home contest have not only won the game, but they’ve also won the Super Bowl that same season.

It all started in 2009 as Marques Colston and the New Orleans Saints handed the Eagles a 48-22 loss. Colston torched the Eagles defense on eight catches, totaling 98 yards and finding the end zone twice.

New Orleans would go on to win Super Bowl XLIV 31-17 over the Indianapolis Colts.

In 2010, the Eagles fell to the Green Bay Packers 27-20 in their first home game after trading Donovan McNabb to division rival Washington.

Aaron Rodgers led his Packers to victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV, by a score of 31-25.

Most recently, in 2011, the Giants’ Victor Cruz had his breakout NFL game, totaling 110 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-16 Big Blue victory at the Linc in Week 3.

The Giants then proceeded to win Super Bowl XLVI, topping Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 21-17.

The premiere 1:00 PM matchup on Sunday featuring the Eagles and Ravens will have plenty of implications if history decides to repeat itself once again.

The Eagles are coming off a four-interception performance from Michael Vick in which they barely edged out the Browns 17-16 in Cleveland. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie has made it clear that Reid is on the hot seat and the distractions on to head coach and team, could prove disastrous if the Eagles once again lose their home opener.

While a Ravens win Sunday by no means makes them Super Bowl XLVII champions, it sure is fun to think about when presented with such a glaring statistical anomaly.

Fun to think about for fans, that is.

For the team – who are surely completely unaware of the odd fact pointed out above – the next goal is clear and right in front of them: 2-0.
