There are rumors swirling that the Ravens were very close to a contractual agreement with Joe Flacco during the summer of 2012 but the progress made by Flacco’s agent Joe Linta and Ravens capologist Pat Moriarty came to a screeching halt when Ozzie Newsome stepped in.

Word is that Linta and Newsome aren’t exactly golfing buddies and some observers have suggested that Ozzie believes that Linta is in over his head, having next to no experience negotiating high profile deals like that of a franchise quarterback.

Will a deal ever get done?

Those close to the team do believe a deal will happen but maybe not by the March 4, 4PM deadline. While the Ravens have to use the franchise tag by March 4th at 4PM, they don’t have to officially be under the Cap until 4PM on March 12.

So what difference will 8 days make?

The franchise tag is expected to trigger some cap casualties but those additional 8 days could be enough to get a long-term deal done with Flacco thus sparing some players from the cutting blade.

It will be interesting to see which tag the Ravens apply to Flacco, the exclusive or the non-exclusive. Tagging Flacco with the exclusive flavor could suggest the team is very close to a deal and they don’t want others in the mix to spin positive discussions in the wrong direction.

However a non-exclusive label could mean that Ozzie Newsome truly is fed up with Linta and he’s willing to allow the market to determine Flacco’s value.

Our resident capologist Brian McFarland will have more on this topic tomorrow.
