The details of Vonta Leach’s new contract have finally been fully reported. As reported here first, Leach’s base salaries will be $840K (2013) and $1.75M (2014).  His 2013 Cap number will be $1.47M.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun, Leach received a Signing Bonus of $1.16M and has 2013 Incentives of $50K.

Given that the incentives do count against the 2013 Cap, they would be Likely To Be Earn Incentives, meaning that Leach reached those statistical benchmarks in 2012.  If Leach fails to earn those incentives this season, the $50K will be credited back to the Ravens on next year’s Cap.

The total max value of the deal is $3.8M.

The contract breaks down as follows:

So, Leach will receive $2M in 2013 (with possibly $50K more from the incentives).  Various reports had indicated that the Ravens had a standing offer of $2M out for Leach since his release, so they appeared to have honored that commitment to him.

Prior to his release, Leach had a Cap number of $4.333M and the team saved $3M upon his release.  With his new Cap number being $1.47M, the Ravens have lowered his overall Cap charge by $1.53M.

PRESENT CAP SPACE:  With Leach now official, the Ravens are currently $4,384,459 under the Salary Cap.  That number comprises only the top 51 Cap numbers and all dead money (from the release/retirement/trade of players) being carried against the Cap.  As of the first week of the season, all players on the 53-man roster, Injured Reserve (IR), PUP and the practice squad must fit under the Cap.  Based on present projections, and assuming no really surprising cuts, it appears that the Ravens will be very tight against the Cap when the season beings.

  1. Nice breakdown. With Pitta being put on IR, don’t the Ravens get that money put back on the cap? And if so, was that in your calculations?

  2. People keep talking about Ozzie doing his magic to bring in more talent but the salary cap limits his options and I’m glad. I think we have the talent on the roster, we just need to identify and exploit it.

    Thanks for the read.
