As the Ravens prepare to kick off the 2013 NFL regular season Thursday against the Denver Broncos (8:30 EST), official injury designations will be made by 4:00 following each practice. The Ravens will travel to Denver on Wednesday and have another “walk-through,” or A.A.C.T. (Alignment, Assignment, Count and Technique) as head coach John Harbaugh likes to call it, prior to having to release their inactive list 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
OUT
DT- Arthur Jones (Illness, NFI) – On Monday, the Ravens already ruled starting DT Arthur Jones out with an undisclosed injury. Coach Harbaugh mentioned that Jones’ injury isn’t life threatening, but wouldn’t disclose the nature besides saying it’s non-football related.
“We’ve got to get some tests done to ensure that he’s okay,” Harbaugh said following today’s practice. “Until the tests come out the right way, he’s not going to be able to play.”
As for how much time Jones would miss, Harbaugh was still unaware.
“It could be a week, it could be indefinitely. We don’t think it’s going to be the second part,” he said.
Harbaugh added that Jones would be seeing a specialist on Wednesday and would leave any updates in regards to the nature of Jones’ injury up to Jones himself if he felt inclined to speak on it. Starting in Jones’ place will be Marcus Spears, who the Ravens signed as a free agent during the offseason.
TE – Dennis Pitta (Hip) – Dennis Pitta will show up on the injury report as a formality as he currently occupies a spot on the 53-man active roster. The Ravens are expected to place Pitta on Injured Reserve with a designation to return. Taking Pitta’s spot on the roster is expected to be TE Billy Bajema, who played with the team last year . He was likely released on Saturday only because the Ravens had to carry Pitta on the roster past Saturday’s 53-man roster cut deadline.
LIMITED PARTICIPANT
OLB/DL Pernell McPhee (knee) – As a new addition to today’s report, McPhee’s injury hasn’t been addressed. This may just be a precaution leading up to Thursday.
DID NOT PARTICIPATE
OL – Ryan Jensen (foot) – Jensen broke his foot during training camp and his injury is expected to take 10 weeks to heal. Surprisingly, Jensen wasn’t placed on injured reserve, so the team must feel encouraged that he can contribute at some point this season. Chances are extremely unlikely that Jensen will see the field any time soon.
WR – Deonte Thompson (foot) – Thompson also injured himself during training camp, hurting his foot during the Ravens preseason home opener against the Falcons. Thompson has yet to see the field since, and shouldn’t be considered a possibility to play on Thursday at this point.
DT Brandon Williams (toe) – Rookie third-round pick Brandon Williams could miss his first professional game. Williams was sidelined from practice with a toe injury and multiple media members reported that Williams was seen in a walking boot before Monday’s practice.
FULL PARTICIPATION
TE Ed Dickson (thigh) – After missing much of the preseason with a hamstring injury, tight end Ed Dickson appears to be ready to go for Thursday’s opener. After playing in Pitta’s shadow for most of the past two seasons, Dickson is the Ravens’ primary target at tight end while Pitta recovers from a dislocated hip. The Ravens have veteran Dallas Clark playing behind Dickson, but given Clark’s performance during the preseason, Dickson’s health will be pivotal for the Ravens’ offense.
