The Gambler Now Wears 22

New York is the perfect landing spot for future Hall of Famer Ed Reed. There the setting is probably as familiar as anywhere else in the NFL for the former Raven that isn’t called Baltimore.

Reed will benefit from a defensive scheme using identical terminology to that which the 2004 Defensive Player of the Year is accustomed to. And of course there is Rex Ryan.

Former Raven Trevor Pryce was on Sirius/XM’s The Blitz with Bruce Murray and Rich Gannon yesterday and said that Reed will do well with the Jets and that his preparedness could inspire his new teammates to do the same. Bart Scott was on the Scott Garceau Show yesterday on 105.7 The Fan and echoed Pryce’s sentiments.

But you have to wonder if Reed’s former mates have really paid attention to the guy who once covered 1/3 of the planet. His preparedness may be the same and his mind probably shaper than ever. But the body isn’t listening to the head.

Reed has always been a riverboat gambler – always used his intelligence to cheat in an effective way. But like any gambler there are losses, something the gambler despises.

As the losses mount the gambler takes greater risks. And if said gambler was once a ball-hawk safety whose skills have declined, he too will take more chances, abandon his responsibilities in order to achieve the desired results – the results that once came so easily.

What may have been a pick-6 years ago is 6 the other way.

Ask Cary Williams.

And soon you’ll be able to ask Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson.
